Big Winter Storm

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Big Winter Storm
By Dawnk777 on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 10:07 pm:

So, we are hunkered down for the night now. Streets are deserted and so are the stores. Even our favorite pizza restaurant was pretty deserted and it had barely started snowing when were there! Now, it's snowing hard and I don't want to go anywhere anymore! We have food and supplies to get us through tomorrow, so we are set.

Latest storm warning:

The National Weather Service in Milwaukee has issued a Winter Storm
Warning.

Total storm accumulations of 6 to 11 inches of snow is forecast.
Snow totals may approach one foot near Lake Michigan. Northeast to
north winds of 15 to 25 mph... with higher gusts to 35 mph... will
develop on Saturday. This will lead to considerable blowing and
drifting of the snow... along with reduced visibilities. Visibilities
may fall to 1/4 mile or less at times... especially within any lake
effect snow bands over far eastern Wisconsin.

By Trina~moderator on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 10:22 pm:

Yes, we'll be getting the white stuff, too. Bummer! My best friend, who lives 4 hrs. away, had to postpone her visit 2 wks. ago due to snow. Looks like we'll have to postpone again. :(

SNOW WILL BEGIN FROM THE HARTFORD AND SPRINGFIELD AREAS TO WORCESTER AND LAWRENCE BETWEEN 2 AND 5 PM SATURDAY... AND WILL QUICKLY BECOME HEAVY BY EARLY SATURDAY EVENING.

THE HEIGHT OF THE STORM WILL OCCUR SATURDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SUNDAY MORNING... WHEN SNOWFALL RATES OF 3 INCHES PER HOUR ARE POSSIBLE. GUSTY NORTHEAST WINDS WILL CREATE AREAS OF BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW... WITH NEAR WHITEOUT CONDITIONS AT TIMES.. ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS.

SNOW WILL END EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS OF 6 TO 12 INCHES ARE EXPECTED.

By My2cuties on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 10:56 pm:

We are supposed to get some snow, finally by tomorrow night but only like 3 or 4 inches. I hope it really comes this time.

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 12:31 am:

Trina, 3 inches an hour? Wow! We were predicted to get an inch an hour.

By Colette on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 06:24 am:

We are getting it as well this afternoon. Yes, Dawn, they are still saying 3 inches per hour after midnight, and we are under a blizzard warning.

Yesterday morning they said we might get 4-6 inches, then at 4pm they went to 6-12 inches, by 6pm they said 12-18 inches and NOW at 6am they are predicting 18-28+ inches of snow, with 5 to 10 FOOT drifts on the coast.

By Colette on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 06:26 am:

... BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 5 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 6 PM EST SUNDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON MA HAS ISSUED A BLIZZARD WARNING.

SNOW WILL BEGIN ACROSS WESTERN RHODE ISLAND AND SOUTHERN WORCESTER COUNTY BETWEEN 2 AND 4 PM THIS AFTERNOON... AND WILL QUICKLY OVERSPREAD THE REMAINDER OF RHODE ISLAND AND EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS BY NIGHTFALL.

THE HEIGHT OF THE STORM WILL OCCUR TONIGHT THROUGH MOST OF SUNDAY MORNING... ESPECIALLY RIGHT ALONG THE COAST AND ON CAPE COD AND THE ISLANDS. SNOW WILL LIKELY FALL AT THE RATE OF 3 INCHES PER HOUR FOR SEVERAL HOURS OVERNIGHT. STRONG NORTHEAST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO OVER 35 MPH FOR A TIME TONIGHT AND EARLY SUNDAY... WITH GUSTS CLOSE TO 50 MPH. THIS WILL CAUSE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WITH WHITEOUT CONDITIONS AT TIMES.

THE SNOW WILL TAPER OFF TO SNOW SHOWERS ACROSS INLAND AREAS SUNDAY MORNING... PUSHING TO THE COAST BY MIDDAY SUNDAY. HOWEVER... LIGHTER SNOW WILL CONTINUE ALONG THE COAST AND ON CAPE COD AND THE ISLANDS THROUGH A GOOD PORTION OF SUNDAY.

TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE ON THE ORDER OF 20 TO 30 INCHES... WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS ALONG THE IMMEDIATE MASSACHUSETTS COAST AS WELL AS ON CAPE COD AND THE ISLANDS. ADDITIONAL SNOWFALL IS POSSIBLE TO CONTINUE ON THE CAPE AND ISLANDS INTO SUNDAY NIGHT.

A BLIZZARD WARNING IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OR FREQUENT GUSTS OF OVER 35 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH CONSIDERABLE FALLING AND/OR BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW. VISIBILITIES WILL BECOME POOR, WITH WHITEOUT CONDITIONS AT TIMES. THOSE VENTURING OUTDOORS MAY BECOME LOST OR DISORIENTED, SO PERSONS IN THE WARNING AREA ARE ADVISED TO STAY INDOORS.

...

so it looks like I'll be postponing ds's bday party.

Better make sure we have enough batteries.

By Debbie on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 08:12 am:

We got about 10 inches last night. I am so glad it's the weekend and we don't have to go anywhere. The boys are so excited, they are ready to go sledding. My brother just moved from NYC to Santa Monica, Ca.. He called last night, gloating about how he was going to the beach today. He told us to pack up and come see him. Gosh, I wish we could!

By Colette on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 08:15 am:

Dh took today to go snowboarding up in Maine, he's watching the kids tomorrow so I can go out snowshoeing for a few hours. I am bringing the camera and can't wait.

By Beth on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 08:21 am:

I live just south of Chicago and we will get less then them they are saying 4-6 inches. We shall see! It did something last night.

By Katiesmommy on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 08:54 am:

Here in the D.C. area, we are expecting 6-18 inches starting Saturday and lasting through Sunday..we too are all locked in the apt. and have our provisions...

By Amecmom on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 09:29 am:

We're expecting 16 to 22 inches and a blizzard when all is said and done. I went grocery shopping yesterday. I wouldn't want to have to go anywhere near a supermarket this morning!

Ugh - we got hammered here, too!! I decided to treat myself to a visit at Momsview before I go out and tackle the driveway with a shovel (it should only take several hours - LOL!!). The bad part is that it's supposed to continue snowing all day - so I'll have to go back out tonight and start shoveling all over again. Wah!! :)

By Colette on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 10:38 am:

I acutally had to go to the grocery store, because I think dh's friend that he went with today is going to end up being stuck here. They won't be home til 6ish and he lives in Boston, so I had to make sure I had something to feed him if he stays.

at least it's going to be "light and fluffy"

By Sunny on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 10:46 am:

We are also in the this storm's path. It's started snowing here and I sent my oldest to the store for a few things we may need.
This is a big weekend around Philadelphia. Not only are we getting hit with this storm, but the Eagles are playing the NFC championship game tomorrow! I'd hate to be the person responsible for clearing the stadium! LOL

By Karen~moderator on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 10:55 am:

Hey guys, I realize that most of you don't want to deal with the white stuff, so I hope you are all safe, warm and relatively happy. But please, post some pics for us deprived southern gals?

By Bellajoe on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 11:25 am:

We are supposed to get 5-10 inches today. We are staying in today. DH is out working though :(.

I've got the chili in the crockpot, the perfect thing for a day like today.

By Ginny~moderator on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 11:33 am:

SE Pennsylvania, just NW of Philadelphia. Ran my errands, planning to be home before Noon, when the snow was supposed to start, but it started around 10:00, and it is SLICK out there. Most people were driving at about 20 mph on major roads in Abington Township, including me. I'm home now and plan to stay here.

By Eight_Kids on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 12:13 pm:

We are under the same snow warning as the DC area. It's throwing down pretty big snowflakes right now. Really pretty. I have heard several different forcasts, I think we're supposed to get 6-8 inches as of right now. I'm supposed to go to work at 3pm. Don't think I'm going if this stuff keeps up.
Yea!!!!!!!!!:):):) Snow day!!!!

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 12:31 pm:

I think we have gotten about 8-9 inches and it's still coming down! We finally shoveled off the porch by our south door, since the snow was getting in the way of opening the door! LOL!

By Unschoolmom on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 12:34 pm:

I wish you Americans would keep your darn storms to yourselves! :) We're getting this storm in NS to tommorrow. It will be the third in a week.

This is supposed to be a province with relatively mild winters!

By Ramona63 on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 01:23 pm:

We are supposed to start getting snow (9-16 in.), on top of what we already have, starting about 3pm today. Made sure we have plenty of movies to watch. The temp is only 0* right now, not figuring in wind chills. KAREN, I tried to post some pics of the snow, but the files are way too big. Will try to resize and upload some later.

By Audreyj on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 01:34 pm:

Well, I am a GA girl and while I can imagine it would be inconveinant, I would love to see snow that deep! The only "snow" if you could call it that I have ever seen is about 2 inches which quickly turns to slush and shuts down the state! Northerners always laugh at us down here because we close everything up over a few inches of accumalation. But we aren't prepared for it, and it can be dangerous without the proper precautions. I guess our officials just figure it snows so rarely down here that it is not worth the financial investment to buy snow plows and such....we just shut down for a day or two. I"ll bet it is beautiful to have all that snow though. And fun, too.

By Kate on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 03:22 pm:

It's insane up here in upstate NY. The snowflakes are coming down in a driving wind and they pierce your skin like tiny pins. It's pretty, yes, but it's just plain nasty being out in it. Much better observed from the windows whilst standing INSIDE!

By Ginny~moderator on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 04:56 pm:

Driving is terrible in the Delaware Valley area (SE PA, Southern NJ, Delaware). It is so cold the snow is freezing on windshields and wipers and people are having to stop on streets or pull over to the edge on highways to clear their wipers and windshields. (if they are unfortunate enough - in the case of emergency workers and emergencies - or stupid enough to be driving).

My son had to work today (he works with live animals, who have to be cared for) and left work around 1:00 p.m. It is a 17 mile drive, usually half an hour. It took him 2-1/2 hours and when he finally pulled into the driveway he was exhausted.

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 07:25 am:

We got 11.2 inches yesterday. DH will have to go out with the snowblower again, since the wind displaced a lot of the snow that was shoveled! LOL!

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 12:12 pm:

Ramona, I'll be happy to help you with resizing. Email the pics to me.

Audrey, what part of GA are you in? I'm originally from Gainesville.

By Debbie on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 02:13 pm:

We got 13.5 inches Friday night/Saturday. Dawn, dh had to go snowblow again this morning. We had really high winds yesterday too.

By Bellajoe on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 02:22 pm:

My sister who lives in Rochester, NY sent me some pics of the snow they got. MAN they got a lot of snow!! We got a lot but not that much.

I turned onto the main street this morning, on the way to church and did a 180* in the middle of the street! Thank God there were no cars around me. It was pretty slippery.
