Definition of a "good" baby....

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Definition of a "good" baby....
By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 - 01:14 pm:

We've got such a "content" baby... I used to hate it when people would tell us on the airplanes that he was a "good baby"...well of course he's a "good" baby...just bc a baby cries doesn't make them "bad", it just means they're not content at the time, that's all.
This one guy on the airplane, before Connor and I sat down behind him, asked me, "Does he know how to use that pacifier?" uuurrrgh...felt like asking him "Do YOU want a pacifier too?"
Ha ha ha... Connor was content the whole trip...love that white noise on a plane.

I know people mean well and I DO take it as a compliment...I guess I don't like the terminology of "good" bc it implies that if he's fussy, he's "bad"...I digress...

I know what you mean - I always want to look back at them with staring eyes and say in a sinister voice...."Actually, he's quite eeeevil"

LOL

LOL Heidi! Dh and I love that movie and we quote that line all the time.

I think when people use the term "good baby" they are actual saying "happy baby" or "content baby". I don't think the term is meant to be taken literally. It's just a saying that's been around for a long time.

Now the guy on the plane who asked you whether your ds knew how to use a pacifier...well, he was just plain rude!

I usually say they are sweet babies, I dont know if that is any better. I guess that I know from experience the most happy baby will on occasion do the exorsist thing. The most unhappy baby will occasionally be an angel. I think I also say that they are "being a such a good baby". I dunno maybe I might be one of the ones that drive you nuts.

As for the guy on the plane, I would have told him it was better than having to subject him to breast feeding. Just to see if he would back peddle.

I would have felt like asking the jerk if "he was going to be a good baby?!!"
My dh said that he'd tell him with a snarl to his voice, "No he usually cries the whole flight and if he falls asleep, I'll wake him back up so he doesn't miss any of the trip!" or "after the plane trip the baby may stop crying but you will still be a jerk."

I hear ya! I don't really like the term "good baby" as it implies that some babies are bad. The last time we were on the plane as I walking down the aisle and a woman saw us coming she said "Oh No!". I so wanted to ask the flight attendant if we could sit next to her. Anyway of course our babe was an angel and the guy sitting next to us said "Don't worry I've got 4 of my own".

I am laughing so hard!!! What exactly is a good baby, anyway? Babies cry, spit up, poop, etc. I guess a "good" baby would be one that does all of these very well!

I usually say "Helen is a very good baby. So good that she's just like the volcano she shares her name with ...
