Time for a DD question!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Time for a DD question!
By Boxzgrl on Monday, January 10, 2005 - 11:05 am:

She has been waking up in the middle of the night for a drink the past few weeks. She stays hydrated throughout the day and gets a sippy with water to take to bed but she still wakes up around 2-3 am. If I give her a drink she will drink it and go right back to bed. If I ignore her she will whine for about 15 minutes and go back to bed. I dont see why she needs to drink so much at night and I almost felt bad last night not getting up for her. I feel like its just becoming a habit, and not a good one at that. With what I give her it means shes drinking 2 sippys with water throughout the night. (The one I give her at bedtime and the middle of the night one.)

What would you do?

Is she in a crib or a bed. If she's in a crib, I'd get one of those spill proof sippy cups and put it in with her when she goes to bed. If she drinks it all, refill it before you go to bed. If she's in a bed I'd have a cup of water on a little table beside her.

Ditto Colette. My kids both had water sippy cups easily accessible at that age. Now they keep sport water bottles on their bed stands. *I* wake up thirsty at night, especially during winter months. It's only water. It's not like she's drinking formula/milk during the night habitually so I don't see a problem.

Shes in a toddler bed. I do give her a full sippy when I put her in bed at night but at some point she drinks it and wakes up wanting more.

This may be a problem when she starts wearing panties to bed, because of accidents, but by then she may grow out of it. Try putting an extra sippy filled with water by her bed and that way maybe she will just get it if she runs out. Good Luck it is never easy to wake up in the middle of the night to get something to drink, I even stumble to get a glass of water for me. :)

You could also fill the cup with mostly ice when you go to bed and then when she wakes up the water will be cold.

My kids also both had sippy cups of water at bedtime and now the older one has a cup on a nightstand, the younger would also but she doesn't have a nightstand so she still gets a spill proof sippy. I have never had have bedwetting trouble or anything of the sort. I get thirsty in during mid night especially during the dry winter months or very hot summer months. I always have water on my bedside table, I figure if I need it sometimes my kids might too.

My dd goes in spurts with wanting the same thing. It seems like some nights she is dehydrated with how much she can drink, but then after a while of doing this she will again sleep and not need a drink. On again, off again is how it works with her. I need to teach her to drink it on her own instead of needing us there to give it to her! It makes for long nights when she is up 2-4 times wanting some water.
