In your "mommy experience", what's the best thing for a runny nose?
My 6 month old has had a runny nose most of the day. He's NEVER been sick... What's the best thing that works? (BTW, it's clear mucous so I don't think it's a cold or flu. No fever.)
The only thing I could ever do is suck it out with one of those nose suckers. Not much else you can do with one that young.
Saline and a nasal syringe is good. You can also use infant's pedia care decongestant. I've used it for Helen at two weeks. Ame
I liked the Pedia Care decongestant when my dks were very young, too. Other than that, I think a syringe is your only option when he is that young.
I also use a decongestant and I will probably get reprimanded on here, but a drop of 12 hour nose spray about 2 x a day really cleared her up. My daughter is 8 months and I have done that a few times when it was really bad and she couldn't sleep. It is not made for children, but it had no side effects that I could tell. I wouldn't squirt just let it drop.
Just a note here...a decongestant is to loosen up congestion, as in for a stuffy or stopped up nose. For a runny nose you need an antihistimine like Benedryl.
I am using Infant Pediacare Decongestant as well for my 6 month old. She gets one dropper every 4-6 hours as needed and it really helps. I also use Saline nose drops then suction out her nose and that helps get it nice and cleared out before she nurses.
When I call the pediatrician for my childs runny nose, he recommended Pedia Care Decongestant also...so I would say that would help lots.
I would use Saline nose drops and the nose sucker those its no fun but it works wonders. I'm not much of one for medications, IMO your nose runs for a reason - to get infection out, and if you force that infection in its only going to get worse or keep coming back. I use meds. at bedtime so the child can get good rest without waking up with a mucus crusted face, and or for a fever if it gets to high. Most of the time I will let my child run a low grade fever (99-100) until bed because a fever can shoot up so fast during sleep so I won't take my chances with it.
Thanks, ladies! He ran a fever of 100 last night and was crying every 2 hours...poor guy. Went to the doc to confirm it wasn't RSV and she said it was just the common cold and to just give him Tylenol. She didn't recommend the decongestants because she said that she didn't trust them...not enough tests are run on infants. Thanks again...I'm such a worry wart.
Another homeopathic option is to take minced garlic and mix with a dab of olive oil and massage into the bottoms of his feet. Not sure why this helps, but with my babies it did wonders.
hhhmmmm....another teacher I worked with in AL swears that he minces up a whole thing of garlic and swallows it...says it cures whatever he's got. I assured him he wouldn't get sick again anytime soon since not a whole lot of people would want to get near him!!! ha ha ha!!! i'll try what you say though, kay!
If it gets stopped up, try the saline and nasal syringe. Otherwise, just let it run. That's actually really good.
