Update on Maddie's leg

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Update on Maddie's leg
By Palmbchprincess on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 06:22 pm:

We went to the hospital for her 4 week check up, and the new bone growth looks great! She got the Spica cast off, and they put a walking leg cast on. She is enjoying sitting up, and can walk with help, she should be walking on her own shortly. The new cast will come off in 2 weeks, kids just heal so fast!! She used the potty for the first time a few minutes ago, so that is a big relief. Now we are just hoping she will not have too much muscle loss in the leg, and will be able to walk without the cast easily. The worst part? After they removed it she was screaming, the tech said it was from stiffness in the hips, but she's not in pain now. Oh, and she was STINKY under that thing, luckily we got to wipe her down with soap before the new one went on. :)

Glad to hear she's doing so well! Give her a hug for me.

Glad you got that cast off, now only 2 more weeks. I hope things go great and her muscles are still strong! Glad she went potty. :)

Good news. Glad she is closer to getting it all off.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 11:21 pm:

I'm glad she is healing and doing better. She must like being able to walk again.

By Kay on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 - 11:55 pm:

I know you're both relieved to have that thing off! Kids are very resilient - I'm sure she'll be just fine....much better than any of us would be, most likely.

It is amazing how fast they heal. My dd broke her arm last January and it healed completely in five weeks. We were shocked that it healed that fast. I'm glad you dd is doing so well.

UGH, I HATE that smell underneath casts! It's unavoidable too!

Kids heal quickly and are so adaptable, it's amazing.

How is she doing today?

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 08:19 am:

I broke my leg when I was 15 (that's what I get for trying to ice skate like an Olympic star with many years of training, of which I had had none!) I don't remember the smell at all. What I do remember is all the accumulated dead skin on my lower leg. I would shed tons of skin cells every time I took off my sock, for a while. Pretty ugly to a teenager. Ew.

EWWW Dawn, that smell is so fresh in my mind since Jen had 2 hand surgeries this year. If I never smell that smell again, it will be too soon!

How is she doing now Crystal? Glad to hear she is healing so well. Did you determine anything about the musle loss--or is that when you take this 2nd cast off?

By Palmbchprincess on Friday, December 31, 2004 - 01:09 pm:

Thanks everyone! She is doing great! She is walking, and going about everything like normal. We won't know about the muscle loss until the second cast comes off, but we're hoping it won't be too serious. She does have a ton of flaking skin, and dry little bumps, nothing a little lotion can't handle. She's been such a big girl, it really just amazes me!

By Conni on Saturday, January 1, 2005 - 08:36 am:

OK, I dreamed about a man having his cast removed last night and it smelling.... Holy Crap! (as Frank would say on Everybody Loves Raymond)

I am on this board way too much.

I am glad she has been such a trooper for you. Poor kid!
