Overly emotional mom today

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Overly emotional mom today
By Pamt on Monday, December 13, 2004 - 08:48 am:

I had the aforementioned slumber party Friday night which I still haven't recovered from. Then last night (Sunday) I worked for 8 solid hours on my paper due for class today. I went to bed at 1:30 AM and probably fell asleep between 2:00-2:30 due to DH's snoring and clicking his teeth. *grrr* Today is my youngest DS's birthday, so up extra early to cook a big breakfast and give him his gift.

He's been desparately wanting Under Armour (these stretchy popular undershirts of all things!) for his birthday and they are $20 a pop. He got one shirt from a friend and my sister got him 2, which he hasn't received yet, so we were going to get him a Saints jersey. He's a sports fanatic. While looking for the jersey I came across a really cool LSU jacket that looks like a letterman jacket. I called DH from the store to ask him what he though and he agreed with me that DS would love it....so I bought it.

Fast forward to this morning. We sing happy birthday, Noah opens his gift, and his face falls. He tried to be a good sport, but it's obvious he doesn't really like the jacket. I am absolutely exhausted and generally pride myself on the knack of being able to pick out the perfect gift for anyone. My eyes start to tear up, but I fight back the tears so as not to upset Noah. We assure him that we don't want him to keep a jacket that he doesn't like and doesn't want to wear and we can take it back and exchange it for something else. Meanwhile, he tries to be a trooper and assure us that he does like it, but then he begins to cry too. Thankfully he never noticed I was crying because I pretended to get something out of the frig while I got a grip. All in all a yukky Monday morning and a cruddy start to the week. I just need sleep. And...DH is taking him to exchange the jacket this afternoon. Hopefully we did better with Christmas gifts :(

Oh...and did I mention that today is the only day I have to renew my driver's license since my birthday is Saturday and I have work or other obligations every other day this week? Yep...hours sitting in the DMV and then a lovely picture of me with bags under my eyes for the next 4 years.

{{PAM}} That was so sweet of Noah to say that he liked it...for a mom with zero sleep, a rough start of a morning, and who is bracing for a picture that NO ONE likes to take...you are doing quite well!! Thank God for make-up. {{HUGS}} to you... and good luck on that paper. I don't know how you do it all.

By Kate on Monday, December 13, 2004 - 09:21 am:

Oh dear!! I'm sorry you've had such a rough time lately! I know it bothers YOU, but I doubt it bothers Noah that the gift wasn't 'perfect'. He'll just happily pick out something he likes and for him all will be well. It's usually easier to fix the heart of a child than the heart of a mommy. I hope your day improves.

What a crummy start to your day and on your DS's birthday no less! I agree with Kate that Noah will recover from it much easier than you will. He will undoubtedly come back from the store with whatever he picks out and never give it another thought. Lots of hugs! Take a book and a cup of coffee or tea to the DMV and consider it time that you have to keep for yourself. Not the best location but work with what you're given. I hope your day gets better.

That's such a bummer to put so much thought into a gift and have it not be the "right" one. Kudos to him for "pretending!" I hope your day is better. Good luck at the DMV. I don't envy you!

Hope you day gets better. It really was sweet of your son to pretend to like it. Shows what a sweet boy you have :)

By Ginny~moderator on Monday, December 13, 2004 - 08:08 pm:

Hope things clear up and slow down for you, though with Christmas coming that's not likely for a while.

You sound overworked, overstressed, and over-tired. Hugs for you.

And hugs for the mommy who raised a son who tried to be a trooper. That's pretty good for a 7 (or 8) year old.

As for the DMV picture - they're never good, so what the heck. That's just the way it is.

{{{{{{{{Pam}}}}}}}}

Get some rest, you'll feel better. And ditto Ginny about the DMV photo. I renewed online and my photo doesn't even look like me - hair is different color and length now.

Was Noah able to find something he liked?

By Pamt on Monday, December 13, 2004 - 09:18 pm:

Thanks for the hugs and encouragement. The day definitely improved :). After all, how could it go downhill? I met Noah for lunch at school and we had a good time together. Believe it or not, it took me a total of 15 minutes to renew my license!!! I complimented the lady and told her I was astounded at how quickly it went. I'm not crazy about my picture, but at least my hereditary double chin (and I'm not overweight--just look like it in a head shot) detracts from the bags under my eyes--LOL. I even had time to do a little Christmas shopping and I bought ME a new outfit for my dad's birthday party. I never buy myself new clothes so that was a big treat and I really needed them.

Robert took Noah to exchange his jacket and he picked out a red under armour shirt and yet another football. How many footballs can one have? We ate at the restaurant of his choice tonight, so no cooking for me. Yippee! I read "Happy Birthday to You" by Dr. Seuss to him. It is my book from childhood and one of my favs. I don't even know if you can buy it anymore. Then, he asked me to sing 2 songs to him that I sang to him as a baby as I scratched his back before bed. So...the day ended on a lovely note.

P.S. I also got my paper turned in. I proofed it about 7 times and realized I was probably doing more harm than good at that point, so I emailed it off and it's out of my hands.

Man, ya'll have a lot of birthdays in December!

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 - 08:05 am:

Debbie, it sounds like my family - DH, both DD's and FIL have December b'days, as well as in-laws anniversary, AND my X and HIS dad's b'days, and my oldest 2 kids' birthmom's b'day, which I acknowledge.

Pam, I'm glad you're feeling better now!!!! As for how many footballs can someone have, if that made Noah happy, then so be it! Sometimes you never understand the *whys*, but when you see the joy in their eyes, it doesn't matter.

When do you go back to school? Enjoy your Christmas break!

By Eve on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 - 01:19 pm:

Oh Pam, (((BIG HUG))).

By Bobbie~moderatr on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 - 12:10 am:

I have so been there..... ((BIG HUGS)) glad the day improved.
