No tears

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: No tears

O.k......I am reading here about
christophers surgery for blocked tear ducts....

Now I am a little bit worried.......

Kiko is almost 5 months old....he cries a little(if someone doesn't come right away when he wakes up)...but really he is the happiest baby I have ever seen.

His eyes are shiny and moist looking, but when he cries, there are never tears coming out. I mean never!

A tear has never rolled down this babies cheek!

I do remember one day, he got something in his eyes and they did get watery...

But he never has tears when he cries...even if he cries for a long time...

Is he just a happy baby or is there something wrong with his tear ducts?

I think he sounds fine...
Christopher had tears come out of his eyes even though his ducts were clogged.
When a baby has a clogged tear duct, it is runny and watery all the time, and occasionally has a yellow mucus come out of it.
Lots of babies don't have tears come out until they are older.

The tear duct is the escape route for moisture to leave the eye, not get there. Is is the "drainage pipe" if you will that leads to the sinus cavity for excess water from the eyes.

And "clogged" is actually not the appropriate term either. Typically, the opening never opened at the base of the duct, so the dr just inserts something and opens it. The surgery is due to the fact there is no way to get near a baby's eye without the baby moving everywhere, so he/she needs to be put under to get it done.
