Need advice fast...(please)

Sorry but my dd is running a temp (not real high) and my grandma and Aunt told me to let her sweat it out like cover her up and stuff....I have NEVER heard of that I have always heard to keep them dressed cool and put a thin sheet on them as covers.

So which is it? She is sleeping now and I need to know something before I go to bed (or try to) we battled this last night and a little today but it seems that the fever gets worse at night for some reason. Any advice would be so much appreciated.

And katelyn had this (fever) a few days ago and it went away within 24 hours and never had any other symptoms and now hailey is doing it without any other symptoms...what in the world could this be?

Fevers normally go up at night. Give her children's Advil or Tylenol and make sure she stays hydrated. I think the *sweat it out* thing is an *old wives tale*.

I wouldn't make her sweat it out. I'd just say let her sleep so she's comfortable. You can alternate giving Tylenol and Advil to keep the fever down, but I wouldn't bother unless it's high or making her uncomfortable. I do agree with Karen about keeping her hydrated, also. Sounds like a virus. Hope she's feeling better soon. Hugs to you both.

Thanks alot girls!!! She is sleeping good right now and her fever seems to be "low-grade", but I am still keeping an eye on it. In my personal experience, Motrin works tons better than tylenol. But like you say I need to alternate every 2 hours. I really really appreciate you answering, I am off to bed, I got maybe 3 hours total sleep last night so I hope tonight is a better night.

If you overheat a child while they have a fever they can go into a "febrile" convulsion, so you should definitely not cover her up and let her sweat it out. I'm glad she is sleeping well now and hope she continues to get better. It's so hard to see your little ones sick, so hang in there. Best of luck.

I always piggy back the motrin and the tylenol and that works best.

By Colette on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 08:57 am:

How high is her temp? Have you tried bathing her as well as the tylenol/motrin? If the motrin is working and the tylenol is not, then I would just stick with the motrin. I wouldn't give her to many meds unless it's really high or she's acting uncomfortable. A fever is how your body gets rid of whatever is making you sick so you don't want to completely squash it unless it's high or she is uncomfortable.

I got online last night and checked out fevers and seen that it can cause febrile sezures and I also read that the fever actually helps fight the infection. Well, here is an UPDATE....last night I gave her Motrin and when I checked her fever, she was fine, and I got up all through the night and no fever whatsoever. This morning she is perfectly fine. I am so thankful! Thank you ladies for all the help in my time of need, it is GREATLY appreciated, I couldn't ask for a better group of gals. :)

Glad she is feeling better.

I'm glad she's feeling better, too. :)

Your body actually produces white blood cells rapidly with each degree of fever. Febrile seizures are usually caused by a rapid increase or decrease in fever. Usually when the fever is gradually increasing, the child will be fine. Fever is an amazing thing. Your body releases chemicals and utilizes and optimizes all kinds of natural defenses the body has. It is such an interesting thing to learn about and it really calmed my nerves once I go a grasp on exactly what our bodies do as they heat up with fever! I don't mess with my children's fever. The body has an amazing way of defending itself with out synthetic chemicals. I guess I am also very hesitant on the danger it imposes on a "young" liver. Glad she is better! :)

Emily was sick once and kept having fevers. I would give her motrin and her fever would go down. She would feel like playing, act like she was better, but then the fever would just come right back. So, one day, I didn't give her motrin and just let her have the fever. I had her on my bed, so I could watch her all the time. She just slept and I watched TV. After that night, she finally started getting better. I was right there, if she had had a seizure or something, but she didn't. I still think I did the right thing. She was about 4 at the time, I think.
