Worm scare

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Worm scare

We may be going to the ER shortly but i was hoping while we wait and see if it happens again so i can take a look you ugys might have some help for me....my dd says that there are little white things coming out of her butt when she goes to the bathroom...i havent seen any yet but it sounds like worms....what kind of worm would that be and how on earth would she have gotten it. I looked up on internet about tape worms in people but it said it comes from undercooked pork and i havent made pork in over 6 months. And she never eats it anyways. HHEEELLLPPPPP

A tapeworm would be longer and would not come out fully but rather hang there because it's head attaches to the intestine. You have to get the head off or it will keep regenerating. Go to the doctor TODAY. Are they pellets or long strings??

By Mrsheidi on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 03:07 pm:

PS- If stringy...Sounds like pinworms? Eggs are VERY EASILY transferred by hands or anything touched!! GET TO THE DOCTOR!!

By Marcia on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 03:14 pm:

You don't need to go to the doc for pinworms. Do a google search to see what they look like. They are like tiny threads that wiggle. Yes, we've had them here a few times. You just get an over the counter med at the pharmacy, and one dose does the trick.

By Mrsheidi on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 03:18 pm:

after you get help...if she scratched her butt (those eggs cause itching to take place), she could have transferred the eggs to other things and I think they live for a few weeks...disinfect...disinfect...disinfect...when you get back home and give her a kiss for being such a trooper!!

By Mrsheidi on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 04:11 pm:

Personally, I would take her to the doc. It's the first time she's had these and you can't be too sure sometimes. Err on the side of caution, but that's just what I would do. It's a Friday and docs are usually busy, but some of them leave some time open for last minute patients. Don't think I would do the ER route. You'd be there for hours and since it's a non-emergency they might charge you $100. Let us know how everything goes!

I agree with Heidi.

By the way how are you doing? How is the problem with your neighbors?

By Insaneusmcwife on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 05:02 pm:

My sister got those twice when she was in elementary school. The doctor told my mom that she could have gotten them from playing in the sand box. Everyone in the house had to take a pill as a precaution. Since your dh is military and it won't cost you anything, it wouldn't hurt to go to get seen or at least call the nurse.

You can get the pill for pinworms OTC at the pharmacy? I had no idea! My dd has had them twice, but my son has never had them. We got a script for him in case he got them, but didn't fill it and he never got them. Strange since they are so easily spread.

Pinworms cause INTENSE itching, especially at night, and are very teeny tiny little things, very difficult to see sometimes. Typically a lot of them don't come out until you take the pill that forces them out.

Good luck, and don't make her wait if she is complaining of itching. It is the most horrible itch you could ever get. I had them when I was small, and still can't get the thought out of my head about how terrible it was.

My dd had them twice, yuck! I didn't know there was an OTC either.
I treated the house like she had polio. Washed scrubbed down everything.
The itching usually only happens at night, when the worms migrate up the butt to lay eggs. Of course, the doctor's office is closed. I had to make two ER runs when living in Okinawa.
The things we go through as parents that no one tells us about beforehand! :)

I live in Canada, so maybe you can't get it OTC in the States. It's worth checking out, though.
Here's some worm info...

My son has had them several times (he's a thumb sucker). It doesn't require an office visit. I just call the pedi for a script. It's two pills take one now and the other 10 days later. It's not worthy of an ER visit. Save your money. Everyone in the house should take the pills and wash everything in hot water.

To get a good look at them get a piece of clear tape and press near the anus and you can grab some on the sticky part of the tape. Do this at night or early in the morning before kiddo wakes up and the worms move indoors for the day. They do hitch rides on poop and you can see them then, too.

It's common. Creepy, but common.
