Stroller Question.

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Stroller Question.
By Eve on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 02:32 pm:

DD will be 4 this Winter. She weighs about 35 pounds now. We still use an umbrella stroller for her. I think all of our strollers are only for up to 40 lbs. Do we just stop using a stroller? When did you stop using it?

She does like to walk a lot of the time now, but I'm thinking trips to the mall and such wouldn't be fun without a stroller to fall back on.

Do they make strollers with heavier weight limits?

By Conni on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 03:32 pm:

We dont use a stroller anymore. Ds (4) does great without one tho. Probably depends on the child.

As for weight limits-- I dont even know! Good question.

They grow up fast dont they!?

I think your stroller days are numbered. :) I wouldn't spend money on another one even if there is one available above 40 lbs. I can't remember the last time Peyton was in a stroller. Alec rode in the stroller the longest for us but I think even he was done with it once he was in preschool.

The only time my 5 yr. old DD rides in a stroller now is when we go to a theme park. If we are at the mall long enough for her to get tired, then we have been there way too long anyways :). My 3yr. old only rides in the stroller now if we go for a long walk or if I make her sit in it at the mall so I can carry the bags-LOL :).

My kids haven't ridden in a stroller for quite a while. My 5 yr. old hasn't ridden in one for a long time and the last time my 3 yr old rid in one was probably around spring time and he was WAY to big for even the bigger size strollers (not umbrella). I limit my time at the mall or just don't bring them to the mall if I am actually looking for something I need. Of course dd LOVES to shop and ds doesn't so he acts up a bit.

I am going to miss the stroller during Christmas season though, where will I put all the packages!?? LOL! I should just bring the empty stroller and put them in there anyways :)

Dylan just stopped using one (he had the Graco Metro Lite) when Taylor was born. He is doing great, I just have to keep a better eye on him when we are out and about.
Maybe you should try going without a stroller for a week or so and she how she does. She may surprise you!:)

Thanks, everyone. We really don't use a stroller all that often. I keep it in the car for when we have a lot of walking to do. Not long ago we did a nature trail that was really long and would have taken forever if she walked. We have a festival that we are going to next weekend and I am not sure if she will want to ride or walk. Normally, it's me pushing an empty stroller. LOL! She doesn't mind walking. So, I guess I won't buy another one! Boo hoo, my baby is growing up! Thanks again!:)

Eve, I'm late getting in on this, but I agree, don't buy another one.

I had an umbrella stroller when Jeff was an infant. He was 6-7 months old when I got pregnant with Jen. My mom bought me a double stroller and once Jeff turned 3 he refused to sit in a stroller. Jen shortly followed suit.

Keep the umbrella stroller that you have for the rare occasions you need one. I wouldn't purchase a new one, either.
Don't worry about weight limits on the one you own until she breaks it.
As far as using one for the mall or downtown shopping, grocery store; if she wants to ride, let her. You know where she is, she's not complaining and you can walk faster. :)

We still use our Sit'n'Stand occasionally, but only when we have A LOT of walking to do, like at an amusement park. They take turns sitting on the bench and the seat holds all our stuff. LOL! When we went to WDW this past Nov. we rented a double stroller every day. Even at 6 & 8, they get wiped out if a lot of walking is involved.

Let me scare you out of thinking of buying a stroller for a heavier child. We bought one for Sonja last year, and it would hold someone up to 105lbs. And the cost was ..... drum roll please ..... $2300!!!!!! For anyone who reads that and doesn't know me and thinks I'm insane, Sonja had CP and couldn't walk.
Baby Jogger also makes bigger strollers, and Sonja also had one of those. It was about $800.
Time for Miss Syd to walk. LOL

We still use a running stroller in the zoo. It is up to 45 pounds - ds is about 45 pounds.

If you go to an amusement park, you can always rent one for the day. Same thing with the mall, if you find that she is getting tired you can just rent one...

We use the "rent strollers" at the Mall. Ours look like little cars and we shop at Publix. They have little car fronts attached to the buggies. WalMart, Target and The Salvation Army Store all have "buggies" thank God! AJ

Brendan won't be 4 until February but we still use both our big one and our umbrella one on occasions. The big one is nicer for trips where we have packages, and last week at the ER I used that one. I always have my smaller one in the trunk though just in case.

By Nicosmom on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 09:02 pm:

We usually have one in the car just in case. Ds (4 in March) always wants to walk in the mall. We would definitely take it if we were going to a fair or something.

By Mommyathome on Tuesday, September 7, 2004 - 11:32 am:

Sheesh! I can't believe she'll be 4 already. My kids were all out of the stroller by about age 3. It was necessary for us because we always had a new baby to put in the stroller! Plus, they seemed to get heavy pushing around. They thought it was very cool to be able to walk instead of ride. They did very well keeping up in the mall.
If all else fails, you could rent a mall stroller. (the car shaped kind) Those things are so heavy and sturdy (at least at our closest mall) that I think *I* could ride in one LOL
