Swollen tonsil question.

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Swollen tonsil question.
By Eve on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 11:05 am:

DD, 3 1/2 is sick again! She was sick one month ago, with swollen tonsils with white spots. I brought her in on a Saturday and he tested for Strep and it was negative. He said it seemed viral and it should go away on it's own.

Well, the fever went away, but her swollen tonsils didn't. I didn't really worry about it, thinking she was feeling fine. No fever, happy, no complaining.

Now, she is sick again! Yesterday she had me in a panic when her fever hit well over 105, too close to 106. She was hallucinating and having nightmares. I gave her Motrin, got her in the tub and it came down a few degrees. The Dr. on call (The same one that saw her a month ago) said that was all normal when a fever went that high. He said it was good that it came down, just keep giving her liquids and take her in today.

She was also up all night, throwing up! I'm not sure she slept at all.:(

Does anyone have any experience with the swollen tonsils? If this is viral, shouldn't they go back down to normal size? I'm just concerned. I take her in this afternoon. I'll keep you posted.

Eve, my ds was pretty sick 3 weeks ago. He had mouth sores and a sore throat. He ended up having strep, but our ped. said he thought he also had a viral infection in addition to the strep. He said that his tonsils and glands were swollen. This along with the mouth sores were all symptoms of a viral infection. Ds did get an antibiotic because of the strep, but he said if it was viral too that it might take a while before he felt better. I think it was about a week before he was feeling like himself again. He didn't eat much during that time and seemed to sleep a lot. He did have a fever, but it wasn't as high as Syds.

I hope Syd is feeling better soon. Sounds like she does have the symptoms of a viral infection. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do but wait it out. Let us know what the doctor says.

Eve, throwing up, high fever, swollen tonsils sound like strep to me.

Does she have really foul breath? Any rash?

Poor Syd! Hate to tell you, but once they start preschool, they are exposed to all kinds of germs and usually get sick more.

Eve, one last thing. Try and get her to drink fluids as much as possible. With her vomiting and having such a high fever, you don't want her to get dehydrated.

By Truestori on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 11:18 am:

Eve,

My daughter has always been prone to strep and her fevers became very high when she was little, also.It can be so scary. Hopefully the doctor can give you some great advice. I just held her alot, did the motrin, tylenol thing and baths. I know you said its not strep but since she is around little kids at preschool plan on her being out sick ALOT the first year. I remeber thinking with both children, why am I paying for them to get sick?? Hope she feels better soon.

By Ginny~moderator on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 01:31 pm:

Oh yes, push fluids, tylenol, motrin, etc. And get on your doctor's back to (a) find out what is happening and (b) do something. Running a 105-106 fever is entirely too high and potentially dangerous. If my child were running 104 & higher and the doctor said "that's normal", I'd be heading for the emergency room in a flash.

By Dana on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 01:39 pm:

In agreement with others. 105+ temp would urge me to set an appt w/ dr again for another strep test. Can you call again and get a different dr to respond?

By Mommyathome on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 02:20 pm:

I would get a second opinion. Her doctor didn't seem too concerned over the extremely high temp. Maybe try a different doctor?

Try piggy-backing tylenol and motrin to help keep the fever from spiking in between doses.

I hope she feels better soon! Poor girl :(

We're back from seeing Syd's Doctor. He did a strep test and it came back negative. He said it was a virus. He seemed to think that this was Hand, foot and mouth. He said it just presents differently in different people. She has a sore in her mouth as well. She did last time too. Also, last time, DH and myself had a teeny-tiny little sore that hurt like heck. Neither one of us gets cold sores.

He told me to have her gargle and swallow half Benadryl and Mylanta and push the fluids, Tylenol and cold foods. He didn't seem concerned about the fever. The good news, is today the fever seems to have broken. Her mood has improved. He said sometimes it just takes the tonsils a while to go back down.

The Mylanta for the sore throat it a new one for us though! Thanks, everyone. I hope this is the last time we get this bug! It's awful!

By Debbie on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 03:25 pm:

Eve, funny you should mention the Benadryl/Mylanta. Ds's doctor told us to do the exact same thing!! I couldn't get ds to swallow it, so I don't know if it works or not.

Glad she is doing a little better today. Hopefully, she'll be back to her old self in no time.

By Monicamomof3 on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 08:24 pm:

did the doc. take blood? Viruses usually come on fast and strong and bacterial infections usually come on a little slower and gradually get worse until something is done. That info. has helped me out alot. The best advice is FOLLOW YOUR MOTHERLY INSTINCTS... the are almost always right!

Eve, how is Syd today?

By Eve on Thursday, August 26, 2004 - 10:01 am:

Thanks for asking, Karen. She's doing much better. Her fever seems to finally be gone. She's just super grumpy! So, I think she's not back to herself yet. Hopefully soon! I can't handle so much grumpiness! I also want to get out of the house! LOL! :)

By Colette on Thursday, August 26, 2004 - 11:07 am:

Glad she's feeling a bit better! Hope the grumpiness goes away quick.

Eve, I'm glad she is feeling better. Whenever I get sick, I get swollen tonsils and the white spots. I can't tell you how many times I have been tested for strep and they have all come back negative. I usually end up with a sore throat for at least a week, and it always makes me grumpy :(.

By Nicosmom on Thursday, August 26, 2004 - 08:24 pm:

Eve, glad to hear that Sydney is better. When Nico first started pre-school he was always sick. This sounds like it was awful, poor thing.

By Karen~moderator on Friday, August 27, 2004 - 07:38 pm:

Eve, is Syd *all better* now??

By Eve on Friday, August 27, 2004 - 08:02 pm:

Hi Karen! She still has HUGE tonsils, but I don't see any white in there. Her fever is gone and today she was in a much better mood. I'm going to watch the tonsils and see if they go down any. If not, I'll probably give the Dr. another call to find out if that's normal. It's just so strange! I'm hoping tomorrow is a good day for her. I have so much to do! Hope your weekend is good! :)
