Parent of a high-schooler?!?!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Parent of a high-schooler?!?!
By Happynerdmom on Monday, August 23, 2004 - 10:37 am:

Well, I guess today I'm officially the parent of a high-schooler! My dks started school today, and dd is now a freshman. (Ds is in 6th.) Yikes! BTW, for those that remember (or care!LOL) My dd had been diagnosed with a panic disorder...she's doing GREAT! We've had several months of therapy, and she's been on Zoloft for a couple of weeks, and she says she feels really good, not anxious at all. Of course the real test will be school, where she had a lot of her panic attacks. (Crowds.) We'll see, but so far, so good!

I am glad things are going good. I don't have one in high school yet. My oldest is in 4th. but I do remember my first day of school. Nervous, scared and excited but I do hope that she has a good day.

Michele, hope all goes well for your DD...tell her to enjoy every minute of her high school years. They will go by quickly.
MY DS is headed off to college on Thursday for his freshman year:(

Sounds like your dks are growing up! :) And that is wonderful news about your dd - I bet it brings much relief to both her and yourself!

I hope everything goes good for her today. I also sent my DD's off to their first day back to school. I have a 10th grader and a 6th grader. They are growing up way to fast.

Welcome to the dark side! LOL

My oldest will be in 10th this year! I'm still having a hard time accepting that!
I hope all goes well for your DD's first day and the rest of the year. :)

Well, she said she had an "awesome" day! Only got lost once, wasn't late to any classes, etc. And, no panic attacks! Yay!

My middle daughter who is going into grade 11 has panic attacks, time to get her back on her medicine again, she seems to only need it for the really stressfull times like the begining of school. She started having panic attacks when she was younger, she stayed at a friends house and at bedtime they shut all the lights out and her friend went to sleep right away and she had a panic attack and wanted to go home, the friends mother screamed from the bedroom, tell her she will never stay here again!! so that was the start of our daughter not wanting to stay the night at anyone's house grandparents aunts etc.. it is very hard to get her to stay away from home. Also that night when I went to pick her up she was sitting on the step in the dark all by herself waiting for us to get her. Looking back if I knew it would have such an effect on her I would have blasted that lady. Yes time to go back on paxil. happynerdmom glad your dd made it through the first day of school, my dd is not going back to school untill the first week of sept, but at least she has been in the school before so hoping their will not be to much upset this time.

Michele, another bittersweet moment in child rearing!

I think it would be a good idea to alert her guidance counselor to the panic disorder thing, if they aren't already aware. Just in your child's best interest, KWIM?

That's where I was last year. One started high school and one started middle school. They both had nervous tummies during the first two weeks and were fine after that.

Next week Wednesday, I will be the parent of a sophomore and a 7th grader! They are getting so big!

My son is starting hs this Friday. New school, etc. Seems not to mind. A lot of his classmates from k-8 were together for years and now are splitting up as they went to a catholic school. He will be attending a all boy school. Seems like a great school but I'm sure the work will be hard. I think I'm more nervous than him :)
