Heaven help me, Scott wants to adopt a Rotweiler, and I agreed!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Heaven help me, Scott wants to adopt a Rotweiler, and I agreed!
By Ginny~moderator on Sunday, August 8, 2004 - 01:15 pm:

He took Keyla's food over to the SPCA yesterday, and fell in love with Sasha, a 5 year old spayed female Rotweiler. I met her today and she is a very large sweetie. She had one set of owners who got her as a pup, allowed her to sleep on their bed and sit on the couch with them, and had a cat that she was good with. They retired and want to travel, apparently, and instead of finding a rescue group took her to the SPCA. We should know by Wednesday or Thursday if Scott is approved.

I must be out of my mind, but she is a sweetie. I know a dog is an anchor for Scott, and he does love them. He said he dreamed about her all last night.

Ah, parenthood.

Oh, and she sheds short black hairs like crazy! Though this may improve if she gets daily brushings.

I hope Sasha is a good companion for him! I am so happy to hear he is willing to open his heart to another dog. I've been wondering how he is. Rottie's can be so sweet...albeit a bit large. LOL. I will keep my fingers crossed all goes well!

Im a softie when it comes to dogs myself. That is how we got our 2nd dog. We donate food to the local SPCA twice a yr. We always look around, its fun for the kids to pet the dogs and cats. Anyways, 2 1/2 yrs ago I fell in love with a golden retriever mix named "Q-tip", we took her home the next morning...She is one of the sweetest dogs you would ever meet..
So I can completely understand your son finding another dog...

That is wonderful news that Scott has found Sasha! I think Sasha may be able to help him get over his loss. And I'm glad that you are such a patient, accepting, and loving mother.

Go for it! I had a rott about 12 years ago, we were given her as a gift when she was 6 weeks old. A sweetheart of a dog, and beautiful! I just could not housebreak her so I gave her away.

I hope Sasha makes Scott happy.

Good luck Ginny. I hope this helps Scott, sounds like it would be a great anchor for him.

That is very good news. I am happy for Scott and the new dog.

You are such a good Mom, Ginny! Good luck with Sasha.:)

It seems to me that Sasha is an answered prayer! How wonderful that your ds has found a new dog to love so quickly. I have known several people with Rotweilers and they have all said that they were really sweet dogs. Good luck!

I have a friend who rescues Rotties in MN and she has three of them. She loves her Rotties. I hope it works out for Scott.

Good Luck with the new dog Ginny. I am happy to hear that Scott is willing to find a new canine companion. :)

By Ginny~moderator on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 04:15 pm:

Yes, we now have a Rottweiler. I am pleased for Scott, and a bit stunned. I'll let you all know how it works out.

Sascha is so a no problem dog in terms of her behavior. A real rug potato. Very quiet, low key, not particularly active. Well mannered. Not playful, but very responsive to petting and conversation.

Her prior owners may have let her sleep on the couch or bed, but they sure didn't take good care of her. Scott got her records from their vet and she hadn't been tested for heartworm or given the preventative for at least two years. And on a scale of 1-5 for hip problems, she is a 4. So she is definitely not a dog to go running with him.

However, he has given his heart and is very happy with her. She is good with the cat, good with other dogs. Scott took her out to our unfenced yard and our neighbor's 3 yr old daughter came over and touched her and said oooh doggy, and Sascha just sat there and drooled and wagged her stub of a tail. So that's OK. All in all, quite satisfactory, and a wonderful boost for Scott, which was why I agreed to his adopting her into my house.

Awww, she sounds like a nice dog!

By Tink on Friday, August 13, 2004 - 07:52 pm:

Yay! Sorry I'm late on this but Sasha sounds like an angel in a fur coat for Scott. And what makes him happy is probably making you happy.

By Annie2 on Friday, August 13, 2004 - 08:53 pm:

That's great news, Ginny!

How much does she weigh? Just curious?

By Ginny~moderator on Saturday, August 14, 2004 - 03:43 am:

She is indeed an angel - a 75 pound angel. He took her to the vet tonight and she has a mutant form of kennel cough. Turns out the SPCA gives a two week "warranty", so he has to take the prescription for antibiotics to the SPCA tomorrow and they will fill it. Tomorrow we are going to try leaving her loose in the house without a gate while we run errands, and I think it will be just fine.

She is not a chewer. Poor Scott, Keyla was a player and they would play catch with squeaky toys and she loved to make them squeak. Sascha will take a toy from him if he insists, mouth it for a moment and drop it - sort of well I don't really want this but if YOU insist, I'll take it to make you happy. He got her a large chew bone and she mouths it and chews on it for a minute or two occasionally. Which means I am not worried about her starting to chew on things while we are out.

Because he had to work late he didn't have time to feed her before her vet appointment. When he brought her back, after a few minutes she started whimpering/whining and that meant she was hungry. She's not a barker - I think I've heard her bark maybe 4 times, and each time just one or two short barks.

All in all, a very good girl. Scott has been brushing her every day and she is hardly shedding at all, plus her coat looks really shiny.

You haven't lived until you have a nearly 100 pound Rotweiler decide to be playful in your living room!

I guess Sascha has decided to trust us and feels settled in, or her hips are hurting less since she is not in the kennel. But anyhow, she decided to pick up one of her stuffed toys and start flinging it around, grabbing it, tossing it, attacking it, etc. I quickly told Scott that all such toys and play are henceforth done OUTSIDE! My living room is not big enough for a playful Rotweiler.

By Melana on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 08:24 pm:

LOL!!!

By Tink on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 08:52 pm:

It definitely sounds like she is settling in nicely.

By Mommyathome on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 11:28 am:

LOL Ginny!
Sounds like she is a great dog :) I hope she has many happy and healthy years to come!
