Homeschool curriculum question

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Homeschool curriculum question
By Mommywithtwo on Sunday, July 11, 2004 - 04:28 pm:

Hi, I'm new! I was wondering if any one homeschools? I am thinking of doing this and was wondering where everyone gets their curriculum. I have found a good site I have ordered some things from, http://afamilybookstore.spreadtheword.com

I wondered if anyone had other sites they liked, too.

Welcome to Momsview! I know that there are some homeschooling moms on the board. I'm sure that as soon as they see your post, they will respond with helpful answers. I hope to see you posting often, and good luck with homeschooling! :)

I homeschooled last year using Abeka.
This year I am going to use a variety of sources. I was told by many homeschoolers after the first year you feel comfortable enough to mix/match and create your own. They were right! Too bad I paid so much for Abeka last year :)

Thank you so much!
A friend of mine did tell me that she creates her own curriculum from different places, and she prefers that.
I will check out the other sites, thank you!

Learning page is another great website that you register for (free). It has a ton of printable free worksheets. If I am reading your profile correctly it looks like you will be starting with Kindergarten. If that is the case you will find plenty at this website to do.

I homeschooled my 16 year old last year, and intend to do it this coming year as well. (Grade 11). We both LOVE it!

I used Bob Jones University press textbooks. They are BEAUTIFUL. Very good quality. They are way nicer than the textbooks that the public school had originally loaned me. (The public school HAS to provide you with textbooks, if you so choose).

I intend to order some more from BJU soon, for the coming school year. However, like many other homeschooling parents, I feel more comfortable this year, and will probably use other materials as well. I found two CD-Rom sets, in of all places, TJ Maxx. They were dirt cheap, like $7.00 a piece. Both were high school level. One was English/Creative Writing, and one was Spanish. I look forward to learning Spanish myself.
We also are very loosely structured. We rotate our subjects. We also use other opportunities to learn. Last year, we did Biology. I had ordered a dissection kit from BJU. It was wonderful, with beautifully preserved spicimens of a frog, a fish, a worm, and something else, I can't remember. After we did the unit on the fish, we dissected him (it comes with a lab book). Then we took a lovely Spring day, and went to a fish hatchery and talked to a conservation officer about the mating and spawning of fish.
It's a great time of bonding for he and I. The years fly by, so these are things that memories are made of. At the same time, he isn't exposed to bad language, scantily clad females, and the danger of school violence.
I looked into Abeka, but they were terrbly expensive, AND, I was very dissappointed to find out that you have to RETURN the disks. I guess they don't want parents swapping them around or selling them on ebay.
The whole tenth grade cirriculum cost me $600.00 last year, and some of the textbooks are 'high school', and not just grade specific, so we can keep using them.

Hol,
Are you using BJU tapes?
I am considering (down the road) the Abeka videos simply because I am not sure how comfortable I will be teaching harder subjects. I also hate the idea of spending $1000 per kid and then have to return the Abeka tapes. If you are using the BJU videos or tapes I would love to here how you like them.
Thanks!
Yvonne

I didn't know that you had to return Abeka's tapes. That is definitely something to remember!

I think field trips like that are great learning opp's. I know it's one thing to study the subject, but when you can see it at work it really clicks!

No, I never used BJU tapes or videos. Just the textbooks and workbooks. I did, however, find a company on line www.mentura.com. For twenty dollars a month, you can have 3 DVD's a month. They have them on every subject, and every grade level. You rent them, like Netflix. When you return them, they send you three more from a queue that you set up on line. I used them to teach Algebra, as I was a little rusty. Look into it.
