Newborn question...
My newborn is 13 days old and she developed this cough, it is not like a cough, but she sounds like she is clearing her throat all the time. I tried to suction her nose out, thinking that would help, but I can't get anything out of her nose. What do you think could be the problem? Robin
It could be that she still has some of the fluid from when she was born. Either way, since she's so young, you need to get her to her pediatrician!
My son will be 4 weeks old this coming Monday, he also has a cough. Also he sneezes everyday. We have a doctors appt on Monday, so I will ask about it then. He isn't running a fever, so my doctor said it was probably nothing, just fluid like Mommierenee said. I would call your doctor just to ease your mind. Congrats on the new baby by the way!
I agree you need to take her to the pediatrician, just as a precaution. Our 2nd daughter was like this when she came home and it was similar to sinus/allergy drainage. The medication given did not work well, so (you're going to laugh). I slept out on the couch with her (placed the carseat on the floor byside the couch). I would place her in an infant car seat (actually buckle her in) and she slept upright instead of on her back, belly or side. She slept through the night like this because the drainage would actually drain. I know this sounds silly, but that's the only way she could sleep comfortably. Good luck.
My youngest nephew did this when he came home. They told my SIL his chords weren't fully developed & that it would eventually go away. I agree with Renee, have the doctor look. It doesn't sound almost like barking does it?
I agree, to ease your mind just take her to the dr. Never be afraid or feel silly about calling your nurse on call or pediatrician about anything! That's what they are there for.
I agree, take her to her doctor. It could be nothing, but it will make you feel better. Let us know.
Marg, It's not silly. My little one slept in his carseat/carrier for a week when he had a drainage like you describe. Take her to the doc. Ame
Sleeping upright is what my doctor recommended for dd. She has asthma and gets bronchitis frequently and they say keep her elevated during sleep. It helps with her draining and her cough
Hey Robin. My ds had something like that too. He had what sometimes is called a "snurgle" I guess. I would call her pediatrician. I called my ds's all the time, she would always see us too.
My youngest did that, I think he was stuffy for a few months. He was healthy and the doctor said it was fine. But I agree with everyone else, take them to the doctor if you are unsure..it is better to be safe than sorry. I could compile a huge list of silly things I have taken my kids to the doctor for...I'm sure we all could.
LOL! I can make a BIG one coopaveryben!!!!
Ditto. I am glad I have a great Pediatrician! She realized when I was about to have a break down & actually watched ds for a half an hour while I ran to the store to get pedialite. I think a great ped is important for a first time Mom to have!
Pediatrician's expect new mothers to be calling, so don't feel stupid! I had to take my 3 day old son to the emergency room because his circumsized penis got infected! I was so worried that the nurses paid more attention to me than the baby!!!
Esp. on your first baby (see my post http://www.momsview.com/discus/messages/23/24825.html) you will be real paranoid!!! But a cough can be nothing or it can be very serious in a little baby like that.
We went to the doctors today.. Everything is fine and she said that her congestion and stuff is normal and it will last for about 6 weeks or so. She gained weight too.. she went from 5lbs 4oz to 6lbs 6 oz in two weeks!!! Thanks for all the advice.. Robin
yay!!! It's always a BIG relief to get a good report from the Dr.!!!!
I am glad all is well. Generally a baby will gain between 1/2 an ounce to 1 ounce a day, not always though!
