My baby has Psoriasis

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: My baby has Psoriasis

My 14 month old is suffering from Psoriasis on the back of her little legs and front elbows. It is really starting to flare up. Have any of you suffered from this or had a child with it? If so what products or creams helped with it? I already have tried several things and nothing has helped. I will probably end up calling her doctor to see if he can call in something strong enough to knock it out.

I've had problems with eczema my entire life and the major thing that helps is oatmeal baths. Aveeno makes a packet you can add to the bath or just a cup of oats in a sock, soaking in the tub will help. I would call the Dr. They may be able to call something in without seeing your daughter.

Well I mentioned it to the doctor and he gave me samples of cream and it helped at first but not for the big flare ups, so hopefully he will just call in something for her. I will try the oatmeal bath - that seems soothing. Thanks.

Take her to the dermatologist. I have had better luck with my son at the derm. than at the Ped. office when it comes to skin problems.

Cori suggest the Aveeno baths to me when I posted about my dd eczema. It helped so much that I went out & got the lotion too.

Glad to know it was that much help. We all have sensitive skin and I use that stuff for everything. Allergic reactions to grass, exzema, sunburn, you name it!

Are you sure it is psoriasis? It sounds like eczema. Eczema commonly occurs behind the knees and in the bend of the elbows. Either way your doctor will probably be able to call in a script, esp if your baby has had it before. Hydrocortisone can help---you just need to know what strength is safest for her. My oldest DS has eczema and prescription Elidel cream has worked well too.

Also ask the doctor if you can bath and wash hair with Cetapil. I found the baby hair wash too strong... I wash my son's hair with in because he had chronic dry skin behind his ears.

(I also use it to wash my hands and face.)

That elidel is amazing stuff.

The doctor was the one who told me that it was psoriasis. My husband had the exact same thing when he was a child - he out grew it for the most part - he only gets it on his scalp now. I have Cetaphil and I tried giving her a bath with it and putting the lotion on, it didn't help. I wash my face with Cetaphil and Love it. The doctor gave me some samples of Elidel and it works the best so far. It didn't do much for her big flare-ups, but maybe I didn't use it for a long enough time. I appreciate all of your suggestions.

My youngest son gets excema every now and then and we use Elidel for him. It works wonders! You have to be good about applying it though.

Psoriasis and eczema are two different things, and I agree with Pam's questioning whether it is possibly eczema. Why not do a little web research to get more info? I agree, a dermatologist would probably be a good idea, especially if she is having flareups. My youngest had psoriasis, mostly on his scalp, for about 5 years, and I don't remember any flareups. I think the treatments for the two are very different, so it would be good to get a specialist's eyes on it to be sure the diagnosis is correct.
