Sick DD :(

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Sick DD :(
By Tink on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 10:45 am:

Poor baby! I woke up at 4:00 this morning with her in my bed which is a very rare occurance. At 4:30 my mommy radar must have gone off because she wasn't in bed but I went in the bathroom and she was throwing up. Then she lost control on the "other end." She was so embarrassed. I got her cleaned up and gave her a small drink of water, which she threw up immediately. She has been throwing up and had diarrhea for the last 3 1/2 hours since. We never get stomach bugs and I'm not sure what to do to help her. She isn't keeping even the smallest sips of water down. Can I try a popsicle or Gatorade? She's almost 7 so do I still need to try Pedialite? She really hates the taste.I am worried about dehydration sice she is having trouble with both "ends." Even if she hasn't had any water, she is dry-heaving. Are there any medications for children for that? TIA You'd think I'd know this kind of thing by now.

By Children03 on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 10:59 am:

Yes, try to give her Popsicles. Children like them and that is what my doctor recommends when nothing else works.

I hope she gets to feeling better.

By Kate on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 11:03 am:

You're supposed to give ONE TEASPOON of gatorade or powerade every 15 minutes, but only if she's not thrown up for at least one, preferably two, hours. I don't know of any medicines to stop the dry heaving or the other symptoms, but you're right to worry about dehydration. If that starts she'll just want to sleep and sleep and sleep and she'll also feel dizzy. The fifteen minute teaspoons of gatorade is enough to prevent that provided she doesn't throw them up. (and no, she doesn't need pedialyte, the gatorade is fine...I think they even make special popsicles with electrolytes in them). Good luck....my seven year old once threw up 12 times in six hours.

By Lauram on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 11:04 am:

Unfortunately not much you can do until she gets it out. Just watch her hydration. You might not be able to give her liquid, but ice chips might work. When it's coming out the other end, she's actually keeping some hydration in her-at least that's what the ped told me. Just watch how much she's throwing up. If that doesn't slow down soon, call the dr. She may have to go to the ER.

By Emily7 on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 11:06 am:

I hope she gets to feeling better. I hate throwing up, I always to manage to break every blood vessel in my face. It is so hard when your kids are sick. I always want to go through it instead of them.

By Tink on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 11:15 am:

It's hard to see her so sick when there isn't anything I can do. How long do I let her throw up before I call the dr? SHe is dry-heaving every 20 minutes or so. What can I do if she is still throwing up with nothing in her tummy? Gatorade isn't going to stay down. TIA

By Happynerdmom on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 11:31 am:

I would call the dr. just to see what they say. Bless her heart, that is SO miserable!

By Lauram on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 12:14 pm:

Is she producing anything or just dry heaving? HOw long has she been throwing up? I would skip the gatorade for now. You need to get her tummmy to calm down. THey do have alot of reserves in their bodies. I did have to take my youngest to the ER when he was 9mo- because he was throwing up every 10 min for 4 hours. The older they are, the more "reserves" they have. If her behavior makes you concerned though, she may be getting dehydrated. Then I'd call the dr. This year alone both of my kids had this 3 times each. NOT FUN!

By Kaye on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 12:15 pm:

If you have any blueberries or blueberry yogart try to get her to have a bite or two. I swear by this, my kids have never thrown up more than once or twice if I quickly get this in there system. I guess there is some naturally occuring anti nasusia stuff in blueberries (i read that somewhere). Also don't let her drink much, but do keep her with fluids just a touch at a time. I am a beliver if she wants to eat you let her, I know when I am sick, if I decide I want to eat, that is what I want! But stick to things like bananas, toast, oatmeal, etc. And never very much, a couple of bites at most.

By Vbw1978 on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 01:51 pm:

my little ones had the "bug" on monday -- same thing threw up so much & out the other end !!
would not take popsicles nothing. (my 2.5 yr ds & 8yr dd)
took them to the emergency room about 10PM that night & my son was slightly dehydrated -- my daughter was still ok though.
they gave my son some water in a bag through an IV then sent us home ........ they were better by the time we got home, they both had a slight fever also ds was 102.03 dd was 101 .. said that alot of bugs were going around & to watch out. but they told me the same thing ice chips gatorade pedialyte popsicles .... cold wash cloth under their armpits (for the fever) & around their neck ....
I hope that she gets through this soon it is soo tough to watch them go through this stuff :(

By Coopaveryben on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 03:06 pm:

This happened to us one night about 3 in the morning and I went to the pharmacy he suggested I give dramamine(the motion sickness medicine) for the throwing up (I gave it to my 6 year old and 2 year old)....it helped a lot and made them sleep too. Of course I ended up with the bug the next day and I took Dramamine also and it really did make me feel a little better, I could tell when it was wearing off.

I also got the over the counter Nauseu(that is not spelled right!) medicine and Ginger Ale-make certain it is the kind that contains Ginger.

Good Luck!

By Amecmom on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 03:31 pm:

Pedialyte or ReVital make popcicles and a jello type thing.

By Tink on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 07:58 pm:

Everybody, listen up. The blueberries for sick tummies really work. I gave her some blueberry yogurt and she finally settled into a deep sleep, kept the yogurt down (about 3 oz) and woke up and hasn't thrown up since. Kaye, I am a believer! She has had a popsicle and about 8 oz of gatorade. I think we are past the worst of it. Of course, I have probably jinxed myself now. LOL She does have a low fever 101 degrees but she is in a much better mood and she has a little color in her face. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I may try the dramamine tonight if she has any trouble. Keep your fingers crossed that I don't get this now.

By Kaye on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 10:50 pm:

Glad it worked! I swear people think I am crazy, but when people do try it I have yet to hear a negative. Strange I know, but hey, anything is better than vomitting!

By Melanie on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 11:05 pm:

Poor baby!! When she is dry heaving, put a cold washcloth on the back of her neck. For some reason it makes it stop.

I hope she feels better soon!!!

By Tink on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 11:28 pm:

She was feeling so much better this afternoon and now her temp is 103 and she can't keep the advil down. Dramamine didn't stay down, either. I wiped her down with a cool cloth and she falls asleep, literally, between heaving. She is still peeing and hasn't had diarrhea since about noon so that seems like a good thing. She is such a sweetheart, even with as bad as she feels. She let her little sister play Dr. with her, checking her temp., looking in her ears with her toys. What a good girl. We have an appt at 8:30 tomorrow and we'll see if everything's fine then. I HATE feeling this helpless!!

By Pamt on Friday, June 11, 2004 - 12:29 am:

Emetrol is an OTC drug for nausea, but I have found when you have diarrhea and/or vomiting due to a VIRUS, then no medication really helps. You just have to hang on until it all works its way out of your system. (((hugs))) to all and hoping you guys have a good night tonight and she (and you!) get some rest.

By Ginny~moderator on Friday, June 11, 2004 - 05:58 am:

Try warm coke or gingerale - coke is better. What my ped recommended (and it worked) was to give one tablespoon every 15-20 minutes and when three doses stayed down, increase to two tablespoons for another three doses, then increase to half a cup for three doses, then as much as she can take. If she vomits, start over. We all know it is much better to have something in the stomach than to have dry heaves, and of course you have to be concerned about dehydration. One test for dehydration is to gently pinch up a bit of skin on the back of the hand - if it goes flat right away she is probably (I say probably, not definitely) dehydrated - if the skin stays up and only goes back down slowly you should be concerned about dehydration. The fever is a major concern, of course, so keep on sponging her as often as you can to try to keep the temp down. My middle son would sometimes start vomiting and simply could not stop - eventually his pediatrician prescribed a suppository that would stop the vomiting, but that was because there was something in his system that when he started he just couldn't stop without help even if the bug or illness was out of his system.

No fun at all for her or you, and I hope things improve.

By Emily7 on Friday, June 11, 2004 - 09:52 am:

I hope she gets to feeling better. My mom always gave us burnt toast soaked in scalded milk for upset tummies. It was disgusting, but it did work.
How did the Drs. appointment go?

By Tink on Friday, June 11, 2004 - 08:05 pm:

Well, she woke up after sleeping 15 hours and she could have gone to school because she was acting fine. She has been bored all day and ate a lot! All bland foods but she just kept asking for more! The resiliency of the young. I also know she is better because she is really silly. She hasn't needed a nap or even quiet rest time so I guess she got all she needed last night. Thanks for all your suggestions. It was nice to have things to do, even if they didn't help. LOL
BTW, Emily, I think that would make me vomit! :)

By Tink on Saturday, June 12, 2004 - 12:44 am:

ACK! I have just had my face thrown up on! Pizza, no less! Eeewww! Now it's my younger dd. She started yelling for me about an hour after bedtime and, as I scooped her up to run for the toilet, she let loose. All over me, herself, the bed, the carpet, the tiled bathroom floor, and the counter, but the toilet is clean as can be. She was done by then. I'm really trying to keep my sense of humor here. Well, at least I know of some coping strategies. I really wanted a solid night's sleep...*sigh*

By Children03 on Saturday, June 12, 2004 - 06:51 am:

Poor baby girl. I feel sorry for her. I know how it goes with the sick thing - one of the girls get it and then in a few days the other two have it too. It wears me out taking care of 3 sick children with in a weeks time so I know you must be exhausted too. Try to get some rest so you don't wear yourself down too. I hope she starts to feel better real soon.

By Coopaveryben on Saturday, June 12, 2004 - 07:58 am:

Why can't they get it at the same time? It is never that easy. Make sure you are spraying lots and lots of Lysol.

Good Luck! I feel for you.

By Emily7 on Saturday, June 12, 2004 - 08:12 am:

I hope that she gets to feeling better soon. I hope no one else gets it. I would open the house up today & disinfect everything!

By Insaneusmcwife on Sunday, June 13, 2004 - 12:14 am:

(((Tink))) how are your dd's now? I hope things settle down for you soon.

By Tink on Sunday, June 13, 2004 - 01:43 am:

My younger dd was sick most of the night. She refused to sleep anywhere but her bed. (She is VERY routine-oriented) That, of course, meant that I had to sleep on the floor by her bed. The only thing she ate all day was 2 popsicles but at least they stayed down. She did drink a 1/2 cup of Sprite and a glass of iced tea. Does anyone know if tea is OK for children to drink? She loves it. She took a nice long nap and went to bed a little early this evening. My oldest dd is back to normal. I tried to disinfect everything today, which is why I'm not in bed, but dh didn't feel well before he went to work so I may not have gotten all the germs in time. I will love it if I can just spend a night in bed! Thanks for asking, Kristie.

By Emily7 on Sunday, June 13, 2004 - 10:04 am:

Cori, I hope you don't get it. I would make very light & bland meals for the next few days. It is always fun wehen it hits one person at a time! Keep us updated.

By Tink on Sunday, June 13, 2004 - 11:53 am:

Yep, dh has it now! He came home sick from work with an upset tummy and has thrown up all night. What is it about the night with this? I'm really trying not to get this but I would rather have it this weekend than next. We have both of the girls' birthday parties next weekend. I am so SICK of doing laundry. Sheets, pillowcases, towels, clothes, stuffed animals, area rugs, the list goes on and on!

By Tink on Sunday, June 13, 2004 - 11:50 pm:

I don't believe this! Now my ds has it. He threw up all over his bed and then had an accident all the way to the bathroom. YAY, more laundry!!! So everyone in the family has had it now. Betcha 5 bucks I end up with it! Sorry for the vent but I really needed to gripe...again.

By Fraggle on Monday, June 14, 2004 - 09:12 am:

Oh no! I'll try to send some germ free vibes your way!

By Emily7 on Monday, June 14, 2004 - 09:41 am:

Ditto!

By Amecmom on Monday, June 14, 2004 - 09:42 am:

This same thing happened to us when we went to my cousin's house in Florida for Christmas two years ago. It should have been a really fun vacation, but every one of us got a stomach virus - except my husband.
Maybe you won't get it, Tink:). Just keep Lysoling and washing everything.

Hope it leaves you alone!!

Ame

{{{{{{{{{Cori}}}}}}}}

BTDT, I really do feel for you!!! Hope you are ALL over this soon!

By Lauram on Monday, June 14, 2004 - 11:18 am:

Watch out! Sounds like you're next! BTDT! :)

By Nicosmom on Monday, June 14, 2004 - 04:38 pm:

Is it over yet Cori? A few weeks ago my son had just a one day virus and threw up only once and I was pulling out my hair and ready to rush him to the ER. And I only have one child. I admire you for being so patient. :)

By Tink on Monday, June 14, 2004 - 10:30 pm:

I'm not sure yet! My ds stayed home from school and therapy today and I think he can go tomorrow. I have to go in to work tomorrow and if I get through that, I think the danger has passed. Luckily, it seems to be a 24 hour virus and each person has had a milder case than the last. D, are you going to have anymore kids? With each one, I've learned more and more that you gotta get through what you gotta get through. In other words, I'm only patient because I have no choice! :) Off to do more laundry! ***Raspberry***

By Nicosmom on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 - 02:55 am:

Cori, at this point I've decided that I'm not going to have anymore. Yes, things could change but not in the near future. I still have at least 2 more years of college and then a career to start. So for now, no more babies. I admire you guys that have 2 or more. :)

By Tink on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 - 10:37 am:

What a good decision! I wish I'd kept up with my schooling but I don't know how moms do it that have more on their plates than I do now. Working opposite shifts as dh, working in kids classrooms, Seth's therapy, and giving time to youngest is more than enough. There aren't enough hours in the day! What are you majoring in? I don't know if we've talked about this but where in CA are you? Have a great day!

By Nicosmom on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 - 12:22 pm:

I'm gearing towards adult education, I've even considered speech therapy. I live in Fresno...yuck. No, you talked to my friend Erin who also lives here. Have a good day yourself!
