What to start next

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: What to start next
By Emily7 on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 - 10:54 am:

Olivia gets to start a new food on Sunday. She has already tried :
Rice Cereal
Carrots
Sweet Potatoes
Squash
Greenbeans
Peas
What would you suggest she try next. I have heard pros & cons about starting fruits, but what do you all think?

By Vbw1978 on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 - 01:35 pm:

What about creamed spinach? My girls loved it.

By Tonya on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 - 02:10 pm:

I started mine on fruit first no veggies yet. She gets fruit with her cereal.

Spinach, Garden vegetables by Gerber...not much else that I can think of. How old is she? Once he was continuously eating vegetables for about a month, I started my ds on fruits. I would say after the spinach - go ahead and start the fruits, but continue including the vegetables with one or two meals a day. This is how I've always fed my children when they were starting solids. (I have 3 boys, and I used jar food)

Breakfast - cereal with fruit (and later a little diluted juice)

Snack (once they were about 7-8 months old - cracker, graham cracker, etc)

Lunch - Vegetable and fruit (juice or water)

Snack

Dinner - Dinner jar and Dessert jar (juice or water)

Be careful not to give too much juice once she begins drinking it. And of course breastfeed or bottle as normal.

HTH, I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have about feeding solids based on my own experience. I know how you feel - I had a difficult time figuring out what to feed my boys during this time. My 9 month old is just starting to try some table foods - so it's almost over for me! Thank goodness :)

Whats normal for breastfeeding????? I was told once I fed her 3 solids a day she would only breastfeed 4 times a day. Not true. She is 5 months almost 2 weeks, eats 3 solid meals & 5-6 breastfeedings. I went to Gerber & printed a list of babyfood. I think I will try the spinach next then sweet potatoes & corn.

Hey there -

I have read that breast milk is much sweeter than any fruit and that breastfeeding moms shouldn't worry about introducing fruit. My 9mo enjoys all sorts of stage 1 and 2 fruits and veggies - and doesn't seem to have a preference for fruit.

My dd didn't start jar food until after 6 months (never a big eater), but she still breasfed normal. I think around 9 months I tried to go to 4 times a day. But she has always been a lite eater, so that may not be a good case to go by. On the other hand, my sister's ds was still breasfeeding every 3 hours or so until he was about 13 months or so; every baby is so different!

Carrots are good!

I personally started on Veggies first. Fruits are so sweet that they don't want to eat Vegetables after being used to fruit, that is just what I have always done.

If you do juice, dilute it with water.

What about potatoes or broccoli (do they still have baby food broccoli?)? Be careful with the corn/corn blends. They can cause gas.

By Kaye on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 - 01:04 pm:

When mine were babies I fed cereal at 4 months, 6 months we did veggies and 8 months we did fruits. However they all had juice by about 3 months to help with constipation. As far as veggies, i tried to alternate starting new ones by color...LOL. First a green then an orange. Just go look down the baby food isle!

By Emily7 on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 - 01:13 pm:

Thanks Cat, I didn't know the corn blends caused gas. I am not sure, but would make her reflux act up more?

By Lauram on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 - 01:17 pm:

I actually did fruits first. Bananas, applesauce, peaches.... I don't think I gave any veggies besides the ones you mentioned. Definitely stay away from corn. I also personally wouldn't do potatoes- not enough nutritional value/too much starch. I wouldn't do broccoli either (too gassy).

By Amy~moderator on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 - 02:13 pm:

Emily, when I started solids three times a day, my ds was breastfeeding 4-5 times a day. He is now 9 months old and nurses 3-4 times a day. I also add a little formula to his cereal each morning just to make sure he is getting enough nutrition. That's just how I do it. Go with your baby's flow.

I always started mine on veggies first too. But they only stayed on them for a couple weeks, then we tried fruit. When I gave my first baby corn he had an allergic reaction and the doc. said to not give corn too young because this can happen. He is'nt allergic to it anymore.
How about green beans? I did'nt see that one on your list. My kids loved Squash, green beans, and banannas. My youngest who is 10 months loves baby cereal, expecially Rice with mixed fruit. Actually she loves just about everything! LOL She eats just about everything we do, of course with some exceptions.
