Ugh, chicken pox!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Ugh, chicken pox!
By Bellajoe on Friday, June 4, 2004 - 09:59 am:

I think my 3 yr old has chicken pox. He did get the varicella vaccine when he was a baby, but i guess you can still get a mild case of it. He has the red bumps, dots , on his upper chest, several on his back and one or two on his arms. He says they don't itch. He has been a little crabby the last few days, and seems a bit sleepy today. I am taking him to the doctor in an hour, i am hoping it isn't chicken pox because we are supposed to have some friends over for dinner tomorrow night, and the woman is pregnant with her first child, i don't want to risk her getting sick of course. It looks like chicken pox, but i have a feeling that isn't what it is....i guess i'll find out soon enough.

Are these red bumps like blisters?

By Bellajoe on Friday, June 4, 2004 - 01:30 pm:

Yes, the dr. said they are probably the chicken pox. If they are, they will start to look like blisters and start itching tomorrow. The hard part will be getting him to not scratch them. Luckily they should only last a few days, since he had the vaccine and all.

Oh well, such is parent/child hood! I'd rather him have them now than when he is a teen ager!

Patti, my DS who is 18 just had a mild case of the chicken pox last month. He did have the vaccine when he was 8 and he only had 12 chicken pox on his body. They were a little itchy, my doctor told DS to use caladryl lotion, or calamine lotion and take benadryl for the itching.
After all the times DS was around kids with chicken now at 18 he got them.
Hope he is feeling ok.
Did you cancel your dinner plans? They say it isn't good for a pregnant person to be exposed to chicken pox.

As long as the woman has already had chicken pox, she has nothing to worry about. They usually test for immunity during the first trimester, when they do all the other lovely bloodwork. If she were not immune, her doctor would have told her.

Be careful with her if she has not had them cause I have never had them & when I was preg last time one of Kort's friend had them & the doc was worried that Kort would catch & then I would !
I hope he gets through this quick ! :)

We still had dinner with our friends last night. I asked the pediatrician when we were there if my pregnant friend already had chicken pox, would she be ok near joey and he said she would be fine.
It's wierd because they don't itch him at all. We did get caladryl lotion and benedryl just in case. But he's been acting totally normal, so that's good. The pox actually look like they are fading already!

My son had the chicken pox two years ago - and yes he also had the vaccine. He had a million spots, but no itch - which was good. I was also pregnant and my sister was pregnant when my older two had the chicken pox. My doc said as long as I had had them before, I was OK.

My nephews had the chicken pox while I was pregnant. My mom couldn't remember if I had them or not. So their pediatrician (my ds as well) called my ob/gyn who then called me to come in for the blood test. All turned out well.
