Any advice on Labial Adhesions?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Any advice on Labial Adhesions?
By Echo on Thursday, June 3, 2004 - 07:39 pm:

I just came back from the Health Dept. where I take my dd to get her immunizations. They give checkups as well and the nurse practitioner who examined her said she had Labial Adhesions, where the labia minora fuse together. It's not that bad right now and I looked on the computer to get some info, but I'm still really worried. She's only 10 months old.
I'm going to call her regular doctor tomorrow and see if she has anything to add, but I was just wondering if anyone here had any experience with their own children with this. I've never even heard of it and am totally worried right now.
I put some K-Y Jelly on it cause the nurse said that would keep it from getting any worse, but she screams like she's in a lot of pain any time I go anywhere near there. It's very difficult to do.
Any advice or suggestions would be great, especially if anyone has been through this with their daughter. Thanks

I had never heard of this, but I did a quick google search. Apparently it's more common than you think: "Labial adhesions are common, rarely uncomfortable, easily treatable, and will usually resolve even without treatment. Even though the condition looks worrisome, it need not be a cause for concern.

Here's a site that gives some very basic and reassuring information on it: Labial Adhesions

My dd has this and has since birth. Like you I had never heard of it before so I was worried like you are now.

My dd was completely closed. Her ped was advised me that unless it caused her discomfort when she urinated I didn't need to do anything about it. It never did. Fast forward to about 2 yrs later. She was so closed up it was like a knot. So the dr prescribed estrogen cream. A tiny bit twice a day. I used it just until she loosened up a bit. We have used it on and off for the past 2 1/2 yrs.
DD is 4 1/2 now and she seems to need it less than before. Now if the cream didn't work then they would have had to do a procedure on her to separate her. Even if they did have to do that the chances she would close up again were likely. We really didn't want to have to go that route and luckly the cream did the trick. Anyway once she starts producing estrogen of her own the problem will disappear.

I understand your concern. The unknown can be scary. The more I brought it up with friends that had girls I found out that my dd was not the only one. :)

My daughter is 14 months old and she has this too. The doctor noticed it when she was about 7 months old and he prescribed some cream called "premarin". It contains estrogen to separate the skin. The doctor told me that she will eventually outgrow it when her body starts to produce its own estrogen. You need to keep an eye on it though because once the cream worked it recently grew together again.

Thanks. They're just "watching" it right now. No cream yet, but they said that would be the next step. I'm not so worried anymore. Just something I guess I'll have to get used to.
