Sylvan Learning or Learning RX

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Sylvan Learning or Learning RX

Does anyone have any experience with these two learning programs? Our 5th grader struggles with reading comp and somewhat on math. We really want to help her as she is going to middle school in August and that brings so many changes that we really want her to have confidence in her learning abilities. We have tried *helping* at home but it doesn't end well and we think she just needs something we can't give her. The Sylvan program is pretty expensive $40/hour with a minimum of 36 hours recommended. The learning Rx program is doing a test on her this week and then they will review the results with us and let us know if they have a program that will fit her needs and how much it will be. If anyone can offer any experience with either I woud be grateful.

I do not feel these programs benefit most kids. They are the "drill and kill" method. I, personally, would invest the money in a private tutor who can focus on his/her needs specifically in a fun, engaging way. Many young teachers like to do tutoring over the summer as a way to earn extra money!

I agree, a private tutor, like a Lindamood-Bell tutor, would be dollars better spent.

Have you had her evaluated for learning disabilities?

Another vote for a private tutor. You could probably even hire one of her current teachers.

Thanks for the input! We are planning on talking with her teacher this week...she has had the same teacher for both 4th and 5th grade (the teacher moved with the class) and so she is very familiar with Holly's learning style and should be able to offer us some helpful insights.
