Diabetic children??
My ds is only 22 months. We have always had a problem with his eating habits. Sometimes he wants to eat a lot..sometimes he only wants to eat certain things ALL the time..and sometimes he just doesnt want to eat but 2 out of 3 meals but eats very little on the 2 meals. Hes been to a GI to check to see if he was allergic to wheat and other things that have been ruled out. So now lately he has been very shaky when it comes time to eat, and he start scarfing down the food like he hasnt eaten in days. Its during every meal, same types of food etc. Again we see the doctor to see if I guess hes diabetic or something like that. I called the nurse and they wanted to see him right away Mon..and it was possibly 2 things diabeties or something else I was not really familiar with. I'm not sure if thats hereditary but (diab) definitely runs in our family. Going to look up some info on other signs and symptoms to look for but otherwise if anyone can give me hands on information I would appreciate it!!! TIA
I konw diabetes is hereditary, but the only experience I have is from gestational when I was pregnant with my son. My sons peditrician says that all kide go through stages with eating, sometimes they will eat the whole house & others won't eat anything. She says just keep him on a multi-vitamin. Does your son drink a lot of fluids? Because I know that that is one of the signs of diabetes. I hope everything turns okay. Please post & let me know...Emily

Diabetes is hereditary, although my sister was diagnosed when she was 12 (we have no history in our family). They say she got it after having a bad case of the chicken pox (a bad virus can do crazy things to your system). Anyway, she has lived with this disease for 25 years so far and now has had 3 islet cell transplants (to free her from the insulin). It's still experimental, but she was one of the lucky ones to have been chosen for these transplants. She no longer needs her insulin and is living an almost diabetes free life. Good luck with your son and I hope everything turns out OK too. Hopefully, a cure is right around the corner!!!
Yes, diabetes is hereditary. Keep researching. If he is diabetic there are lots of different meds and diets that can help him tremendously. Keep us updated on what you find out.
Diabetes is hereditary, but normally manageable. And, it could end up not being diabetes. I have a minor problem with my blood sugar, if I wait too long to eat, I get weak, shaky, pale, etc., but I am not diabetic. I know this for fact, I had a full workup by an endocrinologist last year, and I've had this problem as long as I can remember.
I agree with Karen, i get real shakey as well but its just my blood sugar and so i eat more small meals during the day instead of 3 full meals and i am fine. Let us know what the doc says!
Thanks for the info. We are going to see the GI once again in May. Now his level for celiac disease has gone higher than it was before. They will also test his blood sugar in a few weeks. And we were told to give him bigger snacks or smaller meals.
a few other signs are frequent urination exsesive thirst, tiredness my brother is a diabetic and was dignosed when he was only 3 he had penmonia real bad and they couldnt get rid of it and a few days later they found out what was wrong. He is now 28 and just over the past few years he lost his eye sight and is on dialysis and awaiting new kidneys and pancrease. but he is healty and doing really good. he just does dialysis 4 times a day. Which I am quite excited he meet a wonder girl and in the future they will be getting married. (after transplants and school)
