Visit to hospital for X-ray

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Visit to hospital for X-ray
By Fraggle on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 - 10:20 am:

Tommorrow DD has to go to the hospital to have a procedure called a VCUG done. She has it done once a year-this year she is having sedation (versed) since she has to have a catheter inserted and has not tolerated it well in the past (they are doing an X-ray of her kidneys). Any advice on preparing her for tomorrow? She is 2 (almost 3).

sorry, no advice just {{{hugs}}}

No advice. I don't think I would tell her that she is going to be sedated. Maybe just tell her she's going to rest on the table. And when she's all done she might feel a little tired still. She is so young that I wouldn't go into any details. Just assure her that you will be right there to take care of her. Assure her that you won't be leaving.

No advice here either. But I do think mommyathome has good advice. Honest, but not a lot of information. good luck to you both tomorrow.

Mommyathome has a good idea, I think the less you tell her about what actually is going to happen, the better.

Last fall, my ds had to go the ER because he got hit in the eye with a golf club. Everything was fine, but the nurse gave him some Tylenol w/ codeine in it. She told him that it would put him to sleep (my ds was 6 at the time). Well, back last May we had to have the dog put to sleep and well, my son was afraid that he would go to sleep and never wake up, just like his dog did. I had to trick him to get the medicine down him, so I think the less they know, the better.
