Bottle fed babies....
I am wondering when you stopped warming the formula. My ds is almost 5months old. I still warm his bottle all the time. I suppose it is just a matter of preference. I feel awful to give him cold formula. Am I just being silly about this?
I always warmed the formula! LOL! I just hated giving my babies cold formula, too!
I don't think you're being silly. Think about it....breastmilk is 98.6 degrees! That tells me that babies are supposed to drink warm milk, not cold milk! And since babies from way back usually nursed at least two years, I'd say keep warming the formula for at least the first year. At that point they go off formula anyway, don't they?
I always warmed the bottle. Never stopped!
I never stopped warming my bottles either. It's their main source of nutrition, who would want to eat that many cold meals?
Guess lots of us feel the same way on this issue! LOL! Coopavery, I agree with you. That would be way too many cold meals!
I never stopped with my first. But with my second about 9 months i gradually made it cooler and cooler so that the transition to milk at a year would not be such a shock. I think it really doesn't matter. You just do what the baby prefers. I babysat one boy who ONLY drank it cold, he wouldn't touch it if it was warm.
Actually speak to your doc about this. If your child doesn't weigh a certain amount drinking that much cold liquid can seriously lower their body temp. I heard that when one of mine was a baby, not sure if it is medically sound, but it sounded reasonable. I always warmed mine till they were already drinking other things cool and then there was a natural time to stop I guess. One of mine liked his milk heated till he was nearly two and even a year or so longer when he wasn't feeling good. YUCK!
I don't think you are being silly. I always warmed the bottle when I was giving bottles. I agree with Kaye, giving a baby cold formula (or cold water or cold juice) can lower the body temperature, given the ratio of volume. (I mean that, by comparison, giving a 15# baby an 8 oz bottle is similar to a 150# adult drinking 5 pints or 2-1/2 quarts in the same time period. Wouldn't you get chilled if you drank a half gallon of cold liquid in a short time period?)
I didn't stop warming till they switched to milk!
I can't remember when I stopped warming the bottles. I think maybe around 4 months. I didn't give her a chilled bottle. I used luke warm water and added the powder. It was fine by her. Never had an issue. I've heard different things from different friends, so I guess it's what works for you and your baby.
Ds #1 was the only one who ever had formula. But for him I did it like Eve said-I used lukewarm water and added the powder. I never heated it, but it was never cold either.
Isn't water that is lukewarm or warm or hot supposed to contain lead? I thought you were supposed to use COLD water for all drinking and eating. Anything other than cold which has run for a bit is supposed to possibly leach lead from the pipes. I would advise using cold water and nuking it, then adding the powder.
I have read the same thing, but you can run cold water into a large bottle and let it sit out to get warmed up - after all, it isn't going to spoil. I agree, don't use hot water or even lukewarm water to make the formula. (I remember being instructed to either use bottled water or boil the water.) The reason for not drinking hot water is that solder used in plumbing used to contain (and may still) lead, and because solder is intended to melt at comparatively low temperatures, there is a concern that really hot water could leach lead out of the solder. Makes sense to me.
Yes, I always, always boil the water. Now it comes back to me, I warmed the bottles for my others as well until they started drinking milk (age 1). What a silly post. Some of the mom's around my town DO NOT give their babies warm formula once they hit 3 months. They just prepare it and stick it in the fridge, give it to their babies cold! That is why I was wonderingggggg. I think they are the SILLY ones! LOL I warm the cold boiled water in the mic usually and then stir in the formula.
I used to warm the water in a large measuring cup in the micro, then stir in the powder. The powder seemed to dissolve better in warm water. Since I stirred it so much, there was no danger of hot spots. You can still just warm it in the micro if you are using ready to feed formula, just don't warm it i the bottle you will use to feed the baby, and make sure you stir it well. I was never a fan of cold formula ... Ame
I warmed the formula until it wasn't the "main food group" any more. Probably about 9-10 months. At that time it was the "beverage" and I left it cold in a sippy cup just like milk would be. Except I would for some reason warm the bedtime bottle. It just seemed more loving to feed my babies warm milk just before bed LOL
I always warm Kaitlyns except on hot days when were outside. I think hot milk on a hot day wouldnt sit too well. Or atleast it seems that way to me. She prefers either, shes not picky.
I also warmed it until they started on milk.
I use to use the concentrate formula (half formula, half water) - filled all the bottles with formula - kept in fridge, then with each bottle I needed, just added warm water to the formula - so it was not cold, just warm.
Ditto Peggy. I prefer to do it that way. Somehow I dislike warming in the microwave. I still have a "thing" about microwave oven's. Although we do have one and use it on occasion.
