I'm still losing my hair postpartum.....

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: I'm still losing my hair postpartum.....
By Momaroze on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 01:23 pm:

I need to wear a baseball hat now. The doctor said this is normal (couple weeks back) I called the health nurse today and she said it's abnormal to lose so much hair that you can actually see your scalp! If anyone has had this problem or knows of someone who had severe hair postpartum hairloss please let me know.....I may have to find another doctor I guess. Could it be something other than thyroid???? Down and out about this. :(

By Feona on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 03:32 pm:

Could be vitamins problem too.

Could be stress

Could be inherited problem..

Good luck!

Try searching google for hair loss vitamins to find vitamins need.

I have seen alot of women with this problem.

My 14 year old neice went through this, they found out it was stress induced. Just a thought.

By Momaroze on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 08:12 pm:

Could be stress. I just hope and pray that it grows back soon. It feels very strange to lose so much hair.....thanks.

I'm going to buy some Evening Primrose oil and zinc today. I'm also going to slow down working out. Cut it out maybe to 3x per week, rather than 5/6 days. I don't know what the heck I am doing working out so hard anyway. Go to the doctor and see what I can do about my stress levels! I will certainly let everyone know if my hair does grow back!! Just in case this happens to someone one day.

Evening primrose oil is good. So is Flax seed oil. Just try to get them organic. Also you need to upgrade your magnesium intake and also Vitamins B6 and B12 and selenium if you are taking the oils or else the oils will not be metabolised and assimilated properly by your body. Magnesium also helps you lower stress levels. Have you tried a cup of Valerian root tea at all ? It really reduces stress twice as well as just chamomile tea. Also there is a remedy called "Rescue Remedy " from Bach Flower remedies that greatly reduces stress. It's made from flower essences. You can do a web search and read about all this.
I've been in your shoes and still am . DS is 2 years old and my hair loss slowly stopping last 2 months or so.I got all of the above info from DR Sear's "The Nutrition Book " and an immunity book I was reading. The above all worked wonderfully for me.Stress is definitely a killer.
Just info - I also started using "secret hair oil " from www.mountainroseherbs.com. It's a totally organic essential hair oils mix / infusion and it worked wonders for me. It was expensive but it works if you have the time to use it as a hot oil infusion .

Thanks so much for the info. I will try anything. I am very itchy as well, I think that is another symptom of stress. Thanks!

By Coopaveryben on Monday, March 15, 2004 - 02:38 pm:

Oh, I had that itchy problem, it was horrible!
You know I was thinking about you this morning, with my middle son I felt a lot like you were describing and come to think of it my hair was really coming out..but I have THICK hair and it didn't show. When I look back I think it was post-partum depression. I reacted to things in a way I never would have, it was around 9-11 and although it would have bothered me anyway I was a complete fruit-cake. My husband kept saying, "this isn't like you". I was very strange for a while and while I was in the middle of it I don't think I could see that. Just a thought, post-partum may be worth checking into.

By Momaroze on Monday, March 15, 2004 - 07:33 pm:

Oh my gosh. I cannot believe I did not consider post partum. Oh yes...EVERYTHING is getting to me. I feel like I am falling apart if that makes any sense. Even though I'm eating healthy (for the most part) exercising, I still feel like crap. Almost an out of control feeling. Everything gets on my nerves. Ohhhhh it must be. I would feel way better if post partum was to blame. My kids are driving me crazy...I feel like I want to move out because I can't handle the boys playing around etc...noise drives me nuts. Oh thanks I'm going to check this out.

By Pamt on Monday, March 15, 2004 - 08:16 pm:

If I were you I would go to a dermatologist ASAP. Yes, it may be postpartum hairloss, it may be stress related, it may be a lot of different things. It could also be alopecia in which case you will definitely want medical intervention. If the hair loss is severe enough that your scalp is showing then it is significant and I wouldn't waste any time in getting to a doctor.

My sister-in-law kicked my brother out after she had her 3rd for a day or two. No reason really but he was really upset and it turned out to be post-partum. Like I said I was crazy after #2 and I felt like leaving....this is very uncharacteristic of me.

At the time, I guess I felt like you only got post-partum when the baby was very young (a week or day old) but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I will mention the dermatologist to my doctor. At my last appt. she said my hair loss was postpregnancy problem. Hah! We will see what is said when I go back this time. If she has seen women with as much hair loss as me then maybe...I will relax some. My hair is not thick to begin with so maybe this is why you can see my scalp. My hair is long and looks full and healthy everywhere except above my bang hairline? Thanks for the dermatologist suggestion I wouldn't have thought of that either. I am terrible when it comes to asking for help. I just want things to disappear and get better on their own. Silly huh! Where is the logic in that. If my hair grows back and someone else goes through this hair loss thing just send them to me....I will be an expert by then LOL!!!!!P.s. my hair doesn't look as full and healthy as I said, but still looks fine from the back and sides. It's just thinning a whole lot above the hairline in the front:(:)Just the top part:)

My dd experienced some hair loss while on medication, and our hair stylist suggested an over-the-counter hair product called Nioxin. It's supposed to be a nutrient for the hair roots or something. I would advise talking to a dermatologist as well, but I thought I'd just share.

Are you taking a good multivitamin?

By Momaroze on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 07:20 pm:

Centrum High Potency multivitam-multimineral formula. I've been forgeting to take them here and there. I better smarten up! My hair still has not stopped shedding. I have another appt. with a different doctor. I will have to travel to see a dermatologist....so be it. Also the doctors seem to think it is either stress or postpartum hair loss, actually so far they refuse to look at anything else! Not even my scalp!! You know they may be right but...still I know they are not doing enough. I should have my iron levels checked from what I hear that is a simple blood test. Well, I am on my third doctor in a couple of days for the good old 3rd opinion rule. I may even go to a homeopathic doctor.

I was losing my hair, you couldn't tell by looking at me because I have a TON of hair, but I noticed and dh noticed because it was all over his clothing. I started taking a multivitamin w/extra iron (I am borderline anemic) and it slowed way down. Good luck.

I had very full hair before my first pregnancy. Once my baby was born, it thinned considerably and changed texture. It went from very curly and thick, to thin and looser curls. It has never gone back to the way it was. I went to the dermatologist and he found nothing. I had bloodwork done, and they found nothing. It's much better now, but it took over six months for me to see any improvement. I started taking a hair, skin and nails supplement with silica, which was helpful. I also cut down on the washings and switched hair care products.
It's funny, but now that I'm expecting again, it's gotten fuller, but nowhere near what it was pre pregnancy.
Try a hair, skin and nails supplement, and even though it's far, get checked out by a dermatologist.
Good luck
