When is it time to move out of a crib?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: When is it time to move out of a crib?
By Tklinreston on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 02:43 pm:

Just curious. At what age and/or what size do most babies move out of a crib? I bought a really nice crib before my first ds was born but he never slept in it. I was determined to train my second ds to sleep in the crib but again..... hasn't happened. Anyway, just curious.

My oldest was in a twin bed by 14 months out of necessity. Her baby sister needed the crib! My 2nd child (the baby sister:)) was in a twin by age 2. My DS was in a twin at about 20 months or so. The crib lasted through all three kids, but finally broke with my DS. (He stood on the side and shook a bit too hard) I know some people that still have 3 year olds in crib. I don't think there is a right or wrong age. The most annoying thing to us was that once out of a crib, the child can get out of bed whenever they want. The crib was kind of nice for containing them :)

First child was out at 2.10 years because she was a climber.

Second child is still in it at 3.2 years. She loves it and doesn't climb.

I think both my kids where in twin beds about 18 months -2 years. It was a lot easier transition then I thought it would be to.

By Melanie on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 04:11 pm:

There is such a wide range for this. If a child is not a climber and is comfortable in the crib they can stay in much longer.

My oldest was out of the crib at 18 months. DS #2 was on the way and needed the crib.

DS #2 was out by 14 months. DS #1 was climbing into the crib regularly to be with his little brother and I had fears that #2 would try to follow him out.

DD moved out of the crib at 21 months. I wanted the space in the room for something other than the crib so we moved her to her twin bed, which had been set up in her room along with the crib the whole time.

Age 2 for both Adrian and Goosie

Roughly age 2 for both my kids.

For my oldest, when he started potty training (so he could get out! That was about 2 1/2. My youngest (23 mo) is still in his. As long as they don't climb, my opinion is as long as possible :)

By Bellajoe on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 07:20 pm:

my dd was out of the crib at age 21 months, because her baby brother needed it.

My son (baby brother) was out of the crib at about 22 months because he started climbing out of it. I was hoping to keep him in it for longer but unfortunately he is a climber.

By Dananivyboo1 on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 09:28 pm:

I agree with Bellajoe. When they start climbing. DS got his new rooms for xmas and he started climbing out at 17 months, he loves his toddler bed and new room.

By 20 months, I was tired of changing crib sheets, so out they were! Actually oldest one was 20 months and younger one was 21 months. Neither had any trouble in a bed.

By Brandy on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 08:08 am:

Well mine were hardly ever in their cribs and i don't remember on my nephew or 3 oldest nieces but i do know that Miss Stephanie is a climber she got out the other day 22-23 months old.Courtney as far as i know is still in her bed?

Thanks for all of your feedback. I really had no clue since neither of my boys even so much took a nap in the crib. My younger ds who will turn one next month sleeps with me on a mattress on the floor but I think that has got to change soon - for both our sakes. Do you think it's too late to transition him to the crib at this juncture?

By Babysitbarb on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 06:22 pm:

My oldest was out at 10 months because she was trying to climb out many times in the middle of the night and then she would fall. She slept in a play pen for 2 months then we finally got her a twin bed. My youngest stayed in a little longer. she was 16 months and we took her out also because she would try climbing out in the middle of the night and would fall.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 06:39 pm:

I took younger dd out at 20 months, because she put her foot on the top bar and I thought climbing out would just follow. I never gave her a chance. She slept on a mattress on the floor for a bit and then for her second birthday, grandma and grandpa bought her a toddler bed. ONly thing that would fit in that tiny bedroom. She got a twin bed when she was 4 and we moved here.

Unless you HAVE to or they are climbing, I say keep them in!

My son never liked the crib he wanted to sleep in the playpen , when I would put him in the crib he would wake up so I put a fluffy blanket on the bed and slept ok on it. Beside the bed I put fluffy blankets on the floor incase he went rolling off. He was in his own room since about 3 months old. I had play gate by the door. When I put him in a bed he slept all night the only time he was awake in the night when he was wet or sick. Out of all 3 of my kids he was the best one with the sleeping in the bed.

By Andyjoy on Thursday, January 29, 2004 - 03:57 pm:

I climbed out of my playpen after a nap at age 18 mo. and broke my left arm! That was the end of playpens/cribs for me!

I am so glad someone is asking this cuz I wonder about Max. He is almost 14 months, and at this point is in our bed. Once in a while I can get him to sleep in his crib til midnight but most of the time he is in our bed. He tries to get out of the crib, can almost get his knee to the top rail.

His crib converts to a bed, so I have wondered if I should just try that, and put a gate at his door (even though he can climb over those as well). I guess I figure since I still nurse him, if he wakes while Im laying him down, I can position myself to nurse him more while he is laying on his bed, which I cant do with the crib.

Of course I keep telling myself it would be easier to get him to sleep in his crib if I wasnt nursing anymore, but, I cant bring myself to stop yet.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 02:48 pm:

I wouldn't stop the nursing if it is still working for you. My milk only lasted about 6 months with both of my daughters since I was working shifts and it just only worked about that long. I would have loved to have nursed both of mine a lot longer than I did.

Mine were both out of the crib before a year. Robin climbed out at 11 months so we went out the next day and bought a toddler bed. With Randy, we moved overseas (Panama) when he was 9 months, spending a month in transit (2 weeks with my family and 2 weeks with dh's), then another month in a temporary house before getting our house on base. We just decided to leave his crib in storage and not take it. He slept with us most of that 2 months and when we moved into our house he was 11 months and went straight to the toddler bed. They were both in twin beds by age 2 (with a bed rail) and they both now have super single waterbeds (they're 8 & 10--got the waterbeds when they were 7&9). I've known people to keep kids in cribs until they were 3 or 4yo. Whatever works for you, I figure. Randy never slept well in his crib. He's one of those people that likes to move a LOT when he's sleeping and he'd always flop around and hit the sides and wake himself up. He'd scoot from one end of the crib to the other when he was only 2 months old! We did have to put gates in their doorways without the confinements of the cribs (which Robin promptly learned to climb over! lol). Do what you feel is right. :)
