A Great Game For Dinner Time

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: A Great Game For Dinner Time
By Robin on Thursday, January 15, 2004 - 12:30 pm:

The other night we all sat around and discussed the possiblilties of having super powers. We went around the table to state the one power we wanted. Then the other people had to come up with reasons why the power we chose wouldn't work out. The original person had to defend the power. We really had so much fun! My ds is seven, my dd is five and both of them were able to participate. It really made meal time a family fun time. We didn't gobble our food, read books or newspapers and the kids got a chance to use their imaginations as well as their reasoning skills.

Robin, that is really great! I love hearing about Family moments! It reminds me of playing the Alphabet game on long trips in the car. Those moments they will remember! :)

Thanks, Eve. I still remember my own family dinner time growing up. One thing that I use from that time is the dictionary. During family meals, we sometimes use words that our beyond our son's vocabulary so that he can expand his own. We have the dictionary (a Scholastic Dictionary for kids which is great) right there in the kitchen so he can look up the words.

Thomas has a slight speech disfluency (which he is finally getting help for) and before he could be helped, they gave him a vocabulary test. He scored higher than anyone in the school with or without speech problems...he is in the second grade.

I love all the new gadgets out there...Leapster, IQuest, etc. But I still think that the best gift I ever got as a kid was a dictionary (which I still have today some x years later), a deck of cards (although we love Uno) to play crazy eights, and a pad of paper and pencil to write lots of stories!
