Infant Tossing and turning
My 3 month old tosses and turns/flails about some nights - usually the 2nd half of the night. My pediatrician says he doubts it is reflux - but I wonder! I also wonder if my son is getting any sleep while doing all these gymnastics. Any thoughts? Anyone else experience this with their infant? Thanks!
If it is reflux your son would be spitting up alot and would probably be fussy during eating time. He may just be a rough sleeper. When babies get older and realize they don't have to sleep in one position, they tend to move a lot more. If your concerned with the reflux always make sure you burp the baby after he eats and often while he eats. Even if it takes an hour to get a burp out of him.
Does he wake during his tossing and turning? Is he fussy? My DD had GERD (reflux) as an infant and was fussy often and didn't sleep well. More info here: The Gerd Word As Beth said, some babies move around a lot in their sleep.
I was going to say sort of the same thing this morning but was in a hurry. I have always found babies to be noisy sleepers!! I was so glad when my dk's were old enough to get out of the bassinet and into there own room. I could not sleep!!! They toss and turn and make noises. My mom said my nephews are the same way. The youngest is 9 months old and he moves from one side of the crib to the other all nigh! I don't know why this is but it has been my expierence. It does not seem to disturb them. Just the others in the room! LOL!
When I had Timmy, I wanted him to sleep in a crib in my room but I am a light sleeper. My mom warned me that it would never work and that he would not let me get any sleep. She was right. He lasted one night and I couldn't stand it. He tossed and turned and cooed and moaned. I was awake at every little movement. He went into his crib the next night and for the most part still rips his crib apart at 18 months old while sleeping.
Thanks for the feedback. I can't imagine feeling rested after the tossing and turning he does. I sleep in the same room as him right now -and it certainly keeps ME up! ....has anyone heard of "the consoling pathway" - it is a list of steps to console your child while trying to get them to fall asleep on their own... such as showing them your face, patting them, talking to them, etc. I'd love the list or something similar. Trying to find an age appropriate/gentle way to help my 3 month old learn to fall asleep on his own.
Amy, I've never heard of the "consoling pathway" but here are links to articles and information concerning sleep at babycenter.com. Sleep Index Sleep Experts HTH.
