We're Potty Training! Help!!

By Eve on Thursday, November 20, 2003 - 03:33 pm:

DD will be 3 on March 1st. She is just now starting to actually go pee on the potty! I have a jar of treats for her when she sits. So, she usually always wants to sit. LOL! I am really in no rush!

My problem...today is the first day she didn't want to wear a diaper! Oh Lord, give me strength. I tried to put a pull up or a diaper on for naptime, but she refused! So, I put what I thought was plastic underwear over her panties. Well, she went while napping! She leaked everywhere. Luckily, it didn't go through to the bottom sheet. But, I have to wash everything. Uggh. Not my biggest concern, but what can I use? Are there plastic pants?

Any advice would be welcome. Oh, after she went during her nap, she got up sat on the potty and went again! I didn't think she would, but she said "Mom, look! I want to flush it!" Sure enough, she peed! I just feel a bit overwhelmed. Diapers are so easy! LOL!

Did you use pull-ups? What kind of undies worked best for you? Are there plastic pants to help with leaking??

I did finally just get her in a pull-up! Thank Heaven!

Eve, Jules has Madison potty trained now and she used pullups. I still put a pullups on her when she spends the night with me, but she hasn't woken up wet in months.

I'd give the pullups a shot.

Hi Eve, when I was potting training Sydney and with the boys too, I put a rubber sheet on the bed and I would let them where underwear during the day, at night and nap time I would put on a diaper. When they were dry a few times in a row then I would let them try to go nap time and then night time with underwear. It is tough, I know. With Syd I even put the diaper over the underwear or vice versa. My girlfriend put a rubber sheets and set of sheets and then another rubber sheet with another set of sheets on her kids bed in the beginning so that if in the middle of the night they had an accident she would just take the first set off and not have struggle in the middle fo the nigh to remake the bed. Positive peer pressure worked great with my kids, when they saw others going potty at daycare they wanted to go too. Good luck!

I used pullups with ds for naps and bedtime when he started potty training, he refused to wear them duing the day. I have seen underware at walmart that have a rubberlining but have not tried them. They were a little expensive so I just bought the "plastic pants" and some panties for dd. She goes back and forth between the panties and the pullups. Lately she hasn't cared too much for the potty training thing. She goes when she wants to, mainly when we are out and at the most inconvienant time, lol. She is only 2 so I'm not in too much of a hurry.

Definitely get a waterproof mattress cover. I used Pull Ups during naps and at night. Sometimes underwear with Pull Ups over them. (B insisted on "big girl pants", I insisted on Pull Ups. LOL!) This is the most frustrating part of potty training. There are so many messy accidents! Yuck! Urine messes actually aren't so bad after you've cleaned up a few BM accidents. LOL! Hang in there. {{{Eve}}}

I agree, get a plastic sheet. Do not get the type that is included in the mattress pad, you have to wash that sucker! if you get the cheapie one you can just wipe it down with cleaner and a rag. As for what to do. If she will wear pull ups then go for it. But honestly if she wants to wear panties, let her, she will learn faster. If she doesn't want to put on a pullup just have her potty before nap, she should be fine. I just don't think overly encouraging or pushing her to wear pull ups will be a good thing down the line.

This phase will not last too long, I promise! It is very terrifying (sp?) going from diapers to panties. Especially when they are ready before you!!

If you can get a pull-up on her at nap time that is great!! Try building going to the potty into her pre-nap routine, "do you want to go potty or put on a pull-up?". That convinced my dd#2 to go potty when i wanted her to try, she didn't want to wear a pullup either, didn't want to take her new panties off. "I know you do not want you new panties to get pee-pee on them and have to take them off, so would you like to sit on the potty or wear a pull-up?".

In just a few weeks her bladder control will be much better and she will be able to hold it for longer and longer.

The plastic sheet will make these next few weeks of naptime less stressful for you. Good luck!!

When I was potty training my kids. I did the same thing. Real undies with pull ups over them . That way they could feel the undies, but I didnt have to worry about leaks when we were out in public or when it was nap time.

Thanks so much everyone! I think I will try the pull up over the panties. That's a good tip.

I do have a plastic pad on the bed. I have a mattress pad over it though. I can't stand the way it feels! I was going to post asking where I could find the pads that are not plastic like. Does anyone know? I guess I could look for large crib pads.

I also must have spoke too soon. This morning she said "I NO sit on potty. I wear diaper. I'm a baby, Mommy." LOL! Agghh! I give up! I hate pottytraining!!

Thanks again, everyone. I'll take any tips at this point! LOL!

{{{Eve}}} BTDT. My best advice, and I didn't learn this until the second time around, is to relax and follow her lead. Encourage but don't push and go with the flow. Much less stressful that way.

We have a waterproof matress and sometimes my daughter will not want to wear a daiper or pull-up at naptime so I just let her go without adn sometimes she pees and a few times she woke up to go to the bathroom so she is learning and I don't force her to wear one and just keep extra blankets handy. At night she wears one all the time.

We used pull-ups with our 2nd DD. By the time we were done with the first package of them, she was staying dry all the time. So we switched to panties. With both DD's we used diapers at night until they could go for quite awhile without an accident.
Potty training with DS will be coming up soon. I'm not looking forward to it. He seems so much less mature than my girls were at this age. My first DD potty trained right after she turned 2. My second potty trained when she was 29 months old (decided she wanted to do it the day DS was brought home from the hospital). But, Cooper will be 2 in January, and I can tell it will still be months before he will be ready to attempt potty training. He is quite a ways behind what the girls were at this age.

I am going thru all this now...my DD who was 3 in Sept. will go on the potty all day and wears panties all day long. I put a pull up on her at night...not for naps, she does not wet at nap time. But during the night she soaks herself. I guess she does not have good bladder control during the night yet...It gets so frustrating when she wakes up every morning soaked to the gills!
Maybe I should try the panty and pullup thing at night??
And she is so smart about everything else but this potty training.
I have 2 DS's and they were both late at potty training, but once they did get trained they never had an accident, but this little girl of mine seems so much different. I never pushed the boys and am not pushing Alissa either, but this nighttime training for her seems impossible.
I guess they are all different.
