Milk and Egg allergies
Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Milk and Egg allergies
My ds's birthday is this month and I want to bring in a treat to his first grade class. The problem is that there are some kids in his class with milk and egg allergies. What can I bring in that doesn't have milk and/or eggs in it? I don't just want to bring in suckers. I'd like to bring in brownies or cookies but obviously that is out of the question. I don't want to bring that stuff in and leave those allergic kids out. Any suggestions?
A fresh fruit tray. From my experience, always a big hit.
I love fresh fruit, especially if I didn't have to cut it all up!
I'd love it, but I'm afraid the first graders won't be to excited about fruit. Plus i doubt ds will approve of that. But like I said, i'd love it!
My kids love fresh fruit. What about something like 100% fruit roll-ups?
Would rice krispie treats work? My girls hate fruit and whenever anyone brings it in they don't touch it. However, you could always do it with a chocolate dip or some other dip, so the allergic kids can partake of the fruit, and the non allergic kids can dress it up with the dip if they wanted. What about trail mix?
I would check with the school nurse. At my school, if you have a food allergy in your class, any food brought into the class must be approved by the nurse. She will probably have many ideas for you.
My nephews love those apple slices that have the caramel in the pack to dip it in. I know most kids like that although you may not be able to please everyone.
I asked ds what people bring in for birthdays and it sounds like they just bring in what they want to. Cookies, brownies, etc. But I feel bad for the ones who are allergic to stuff. I am guessing that marshmallows have milk in them, that's why i don't think rice krispie treats would work. One of the moms of the kids who are allergic to milk or eggs, i can't remember which, says that some things that have that food are o.k. Perhaps it depends on the amount of it?
We have a student with severe milk and peanut allergies in my preschool class and he can have Rice Krispie Treats as long as they are prepared with a dairy-free margarine, which isn't hard to find. If you're willing to make them with Nucoa margarine (that's the brand he uses for a butter substitute), those would be a hit for the entire class. Marshmallows are actually dairy-free. HTH
Not all marshmellows are nut free. I've been a Room Parent several times and every time I brought in a fruit tray it was a huge hit.
Don't know how to do it, but we had a kid in day care that was allergic to milk, eggs, peanut butter and other kids with allergies , but his mom with bring in cakes made with out eggs. And I would would they still be allergies to egg substitutes. I'm sure Betty Crocker has a recipe for people with allergies.
Whatever you decide, save the ingredients list off the packages (cut them out) so the kid can read what he/she is eating. I would also get it approved through the nurse.
PS- You could always contact the parent, exchange emails, and talk about what's acceptable or if they have recipes they use at home. There is also dairy free pudding that is SOOO good. Connor loved it when he was allergic to milk and eggs.
