Attachment Disorder
Does anyone know much about reactive attachment disorder, or RAD, as it is called in mental health circles? One of our adopted ds has been diagnosed with it. Both of our adopted boys (half-brothers), came from a horrible background of abuse. They were shifted around to an average of 9 placements each in their short little lives.(15 and 14). Our older one has a real problem forming close, trusting relationships. We have him in therapy with one of the best attachment specialists in this area. She uses Nancy Thomas' methods. So far, it's going well. It was hard getting them as teenagers because they have that whole "missing piece" of childhood that we are trying to restore to them. We feel it is imperative, if they are going to be able to have healthy relationships and marriage. Anyone else have any experience? I realize that this is a question that's almost exclusively for adoptive parents. Our older boy also has ADHD. Our younger one has ADD, and they both have PTSD.
Our girls came to us as wee ones - Nicole was newborn, and Kayla was 17 months. Are you on any adoption lists? I'm on one called beyond adoption, and the name tells it all. It's a pretty quiet list, but there's lots of support and info when you ask. I also run a couple of Canadian lists. They're excellent lists, with a variety of triad members and adoption workers. Lots of excellent info. If you want to join, just let me know, and I can help.
There are a number of moms with kids with RAD on the www.conductdisorders.com board. Check out their Forum.
Thanks,Marcia and Laura. I'll check out some sites on adoption in the US, and I'll also try the one you recommended.
