Karo Syrup: Question
Hi everyone! I have two questions about Karo Syrup: 1. Pardon my ignorance but, where do I get this? 2. Is Karo Syrup ok to give to a 12-week old, or should I try prune / pear juice instead? I've already discussed this with the pediatrician, but I'm looking for more ideas/thoughts. Thanks!!
You get it at the grocery store (baking aisle). It comes in a jar. I gave it to my ds at 1 mo before trying prune juice. Pear juice is not as potent as prune juice. Both juices I watered down though, I believe, though it was over 6 years ago so it's hard to remember. We also used suppositories (OTC) that really worked too. Ped recommended that.
I stuck my little finger in it and gave it to Chad this way at one month of age. I did a little at a time because it would soften the stool and not make it runny. The prune juice always made him have huge blow outs. Good luck!
I used karo syrup, I mixed a small amount in with formula when they were constipated per my ped. It always worked fine and they like the taste a lot better than prune juice.
Thank you so much for your suggestions!! The problem my 2-month old is having, is that he won't go for two days, then gets cranky and doesn't want to eat because he's so full (of poopie.. I know, it sounds terrible lol). Then we help him by using suppositories and he feels so much better the minute he goes. I don't want to have to keep using suppositories everyday. Does Karo syrup make him go or just soften the stool? TIA!
I would give him a small bottle of pear juice or apple juice everyday. If that doesn't work try the karo. That is what my doc suggested and it worked pretty good with my kids. I certainly would try to stay away from the suppositories as much as possible. They medically work, but also the act of putting them in there and the lump that stays for a bit, encourages the muscles to work, and it just seems like you want his own body to move that muscle without help if you can get there. I don't know, but that would be my concern.
I've heard from moms that the baby's body can become dependent upon the suppositotries.
I have heard that too, about them becoming dependent. I know that's not necessarily true, but I'm still very iffy about using them. =s I tried the Karo syrup two days ago and it seemed to work. I gave him some again today because he didn't go yesterday. If he goes today, then I'll know for sure that it worked.
You can also buy Prune juice. Delute it 2 ounces of juice to 2 ounces of water. The Ped I use to work for suggested it to the moms if every there was an issue. Suppositotries do effect the bowel if used to regulate. It will become that the child won't go unless given one. Your best bet is to use something oral. Juices, prune juice, and even some times a 4 ounce bottle of straight water will do the trick to help soften the stool...
