Poor DD

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2003: Poor DD
By Trina on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 10:43 am:

Yesterday DD got several mosquito bites while playing outdoors. At first they didn't bother her much but she was up often last night complaining of pain and itching. This is how she woke this morning. This kid has very sensitive skin, and also has hives. She's absolutely miserable. :( I gave her an oatmeal bath and applied Benadryl cream, but they only provide temporary relief. She REFUSES to take Benadryl syrup. ARGH!

Are you sure they are mosquito bites?

I don't see any bites on her arms. They really got her if they are bites. Poor girl!

Did she put perfume on?

The other day I went to the park and had about 5 flies attack my head because I was wearing gardinia perfume.

I'm pretty sure they're mosquito bites. She has a few on her arms and legs but most are on her back. She was wearing a halter top while outside. This has never happened to her before, but we usually come in late afternoon before the bugs come out. It was about 7 pm when she was playing in the sand box. DS got bit a few times as well but not like DD. It's hard to see in the pic, but the tiny red dots are hives.

Nope, no perfume or anything like that. All of us have sensitive skin and have to be very careful about that kind of stuff. We even have to be careful with sunblock and bug repellent.

Right now she's sitting in front of a fan. She claims the breeze is helping to ease the itching. Anything that works at this point! LOL!

I thought you would like to see this. I put the link so you can check out the other things it is helpful with. I use dryer sheets with my kids.
3. Repels mosquitoes: Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.

Here is a link to a few little things that may help her. I tired to copy them, but the site doesn't allow it.

Poor baby! Can you hide the benadryl liquid in grape juice? That's how I give my kids their iron drops, LOL. I would take her to the doctor ASAP tomorrow. Good Luck Trina! (((Trina)))

Lexi got a black fly bite right under her eye and it is all swollen up and itching, she looks like she was in a fight. I'd try to get her to do the oral Benadryl, it does help. Hope she feels better.

By Missymelissy on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 04:23 pm:

Try putting on calamine/caladryl to help stop the itch.

Hope she feels better soon.

My dd reacts ro insect bites like this too! There is a spray-on itch relief gel made by Johnson and Johnson that seems to help her. It is called Band-aid Itch Relief Gel Spritz, got it at the drug store, they have alot of different brand but same idea type products these days. Hope your dd is feeling better soon, poor thing!

OOHHHHHHH Trina! Ouch! Poor B - I hope that goes away soon!

By Dana on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 05:41 pm:

Poor little thing. Both DH and DD react like that to skeeters. :( I rarely even get bitten.

I have not tips to share with you. Sorry.

By Trina on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 07:04 pm:

Thanks everyone. I put Benadryl in chocolate milk and she sucked it right down. LOL! It kicked in at dinner time, as she was falling asleep at the table. DH carried her up to bed where she is now zonked. A combination of not getting much sleep last night and the drowsy effects of Benadryl. I hope tonight goes well. Perhaps I should turn in early just in case!

Good plan, Mom! Hope she feels better in the morning.

By Bobbie on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 09:15 pm:

That's how my oldest looks if she gets bit. And one of my sisters too. So painful looking.

Gonna try the Bounce for sure.

Hope you all have a good nights sleep.

DD's bites were worse this morning, and two look on the verge of infection. To top it off, DS woke with a swollen forehead from bug bites. We went to the ped. and now they're both on steroids to bring down the swelling. I have to keep a close eye on DD's bites for infection. Argh! WHY are my kids so sensitive?!

{{{{{TRINA, B & T}}}}}}} Some kids are just sensitive to bites and stuff. When Jason was a child he had asthma, constantly suffered with allergies, was constantly on meds, and was super sensitive to bug bites and stuff like poison ivy, etc.

When he was 10 and living with his dad and me, he got into poison ivy out in the fields. Everywhere on his body that his hands touched broke out in poison ivy and got infected. I mean EVERYwhere. He even had it in his mouth, and it was in his lungs. We made several trips to the hospital, pediatrician, and to a pediatric urologist, because it was so bad on his penis, it was swollen to the point where he had trouble urinating. He was on steroids for a while.

The good news is, your kids may well outgrow a lot of their allergies and sensitivies - mine did, and I know others with kids like ours who also did.

I hope they feel better soon! I know you will breathe a sigh of relief too!

My two fair skinned children used to have a lot of trouble with bug bites. We had to take my dd to a immunoligist, he said it is really common in people with low immune systems to have bad reactions. So once we were able to control her allergins and boost her immune system then she was all better. My youngest child just really struggled until this year, he turned five in february, so maybe as your daughter grow older she will do better. YUCK! hope they feel better soon!
