Newbie w/ question about switching bottles
Hi everyone! I'm new on the board- I just introduced myself in the newbies section but I already have a question lol. My baby boy is one month old. When he was just a few days old he had to go into the PICU, and while he was there, he was fed ready-to-eat formula out of these bottles with disposable rubber nipples, which they gave to my husband to take home. Since I couldn't get out of bed myself, my husband kept feeding him out of these bottles & nipples. Now, I am pumping breastmilk and putting it in a bottle for the baby. The problem is, that's the ONLY thing he'll drink out of now- these recycled glass bottles with peeling labels and discoloured rubber nipples that my DH brought from the hospital. They are deteriorating and I can't find them at any store (they are supposed to be disposable hospital nipples!). So my question is, how do I get him to drink out of a regular bottle with silicone nipples? More specifically, how do I get him to drink out of anything else besides these bottles? I've been trying to switch him for weeks but everytime it's a nightmare for both of us; he gets terribly upset and will only drink about 1oz., and he's a fussy eater to begin with. I have tried Dr. Browns, Playtex VentAire and Munchkins, all for newborns. Thanking everyone in advance, and I apologize for such a long post.
Welcome to momsview! Sorry, but I don't have any experience w/this. Just keep trying. You can also go back to the hospital and ask for more of those nipples. They will usually give them to you. Be careful not to use nipples that are starting to deteriorate because they can suddenly break through and all the fluid in the bottle will go rushing into your baby's mouth. My DK's never really had a problem w/switching nipples, but I know that a lot of baby's do. The other moms here will have great advice for you if they've BTDT I hope you can get something figured out for your DS Robin BTW...you can click on our names to view our profiles and learn a little more about us.
I breastfed both my kids so I really don't know much about bottles. You are pumping to give him breastmilk, but have you tried to actually breastfeed him? Maybe that would help. BTW, welcome to Momsview!
My DD went through the same thing when we came home from the hospital. We finally switched over to the Vent-air. It's a Playtex bottle, but doesn't have the plastic on the inside. You have to wash to bottles, but, it's the only nipple she would take!!!!
Thanks to you all for your replies! I was very determined to breastfeed and got help from various lactation consultants at the hospital and LLL, but it just wasn't going to happen. I've been trying with various brands of bottles and so far the only one that shows promise is Dr. Brown. I'd really like to get him drinking out of real bottles, and of course there's the nipple issue- even if I got more from the hospital, they only fit the disposable bottles from the hospital (2oz.) and the recyled formula bottles. I'm quite stubborn and will keep trying, but my little boy is just as stubborn as I am lol. Any other ideas will be appreciated. Oh and thanks for the tip about the profiles =)
I think the gerber bottle nipples are like the disposable nibbles.
Thanks Feona, I'll look into that!
Hi everyone! Just wanted to give you an update. My baby finally went with the Dr. Brown bottles =) I guess those were the closest to the hospital ones. Anyways, thanks everyone for your support.
Glad everything is settled now for you and baby!
Glad to hear all is well now with your baby I almost had the same problem with my DS...I gave him the gerber nipples. It took a couple of feedings before he'd really want the bottle, but I didn't give up LOL
