Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2003: Dealing with perserverate toddler who repeats demands 50 times

Teacher said this was nothing to worry about. It is a behavior to be dealt with.

I just got this from the teacher so I am going to type it up so I can remember it.

How to deal with a perserverate toddler - a toddler who repeats demands 50 times such as "go park" even after you tell them you are going to the park.

Toddler Perserverate on place we are not going to - pull car over and say "quiet mouth" - We are not going until you quiet mouth. I will not discuss it further we are not going to the park.

If in the car pull over and say, "We are not going to the park untill you "quiet mouth"

In house. You need to ask once and wait a minute to get juice. No juice until request repetion stops.

I don't have any advice or really much experience with that, J & J didn't do it, and the older 2 were past that stage by the time I got them.

I am having good luck putting my face right up to his and telling him to stop repeating himself. I am going to get the teacher involved at school. He can't repeat himself like this. It will drive me and the teacher crazy. Teach them to talk and see what happens?!

Distraction is working okay too.

I don't know what we are going to do without the ABA teacher we have now. She taught us so much about time outs and now treating this repeating talking.

Glad you are finding success :)
