Is this normal?

My ds is 8. He was in the er a few weeks back for swimmers ear and the nurse gave him a small teddy bear. He has named this bear, talks to him and wants to take him everywhere. The thing that I find a little odd is that he has never bothered with stuffed toys, even when he was very small. If he had always had a lovey and still did, that wouldn't seem odd to me. I wonder why he is doing this now, it just seems off to me to begin this at age 8. I thought after a few days and his ear getting better he would back off a little but he does it even more and asked if we could go to a build a bear workshop and buy him some clothes. Well, we don't have one anywhere near us, so it's a non-issue, but again seems odd for his personality and age I think. Any thoughts?
My ds (who is also 8yo) did this about a year ago. He'd had a stuffed dog for years and never paid much attention to any stuffed animals. Suddenly, this puppy meant the world to him. He had to have it to sleep, carried it around with him from room to room and took it on our vacations. There was no rhyme or reason for it and it tapered off over a few months. I didn't make a big deal over it and now he occasionally sleeps with it and does take it to overnights and vacations but ignores it most of the time. HTH to know that another child did a similar thing.
Yes it does, thanks.
I haven't posted in a long time but I check in every once in a while. My 8 yo son never bothers with stuffed animals much but every so often he gets attached to one for a few months. Once a good friend gave him one before the friend moved and he likes that one lots. He takes it to overnights and sometimes sleeps with it but most of the time it can be found under his bed or in his closet. He just got a Webkins for his birthday and carries that around.
