OH great! BUGS!!!!!.......

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2003: OH great! BUGS!!!!!.......
By Dana on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 06:12 pm:

DD wants to have a bug party for her 5th bday in May.

We have tons of fake bugs she plays with, but how exactly do I go about making a bug cake that other little girls won't be afraid of? And what about games? What type of games would you do?

I thought we might do a tea party, but I guess not :)

By Melanie on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 06:27 pm:

LOL, Dana! This is exactly why I am dressing Peyton as girly as I can now...I know it won't last long! LOL.

What about a Bug's Life party? I know Wilton has a cute Ant pan from the movie.

By Ginnyk on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 - 06:41 pm:

How about a ladybug cake? Or a butterfly?

As for games - well, pin the wings on the butterfly, for a start

Can someone draw some simple bugs, cut them into puzzle shapes, and the first person to (a) get their bug put together and (b) name it, wins the first (of many) prizes

Describe what your bug is like, how it lives, and others guess.

How about a dragonfly? Dragonflies are supposed to be magical. :-)

I have a book of parties and there is a section on a girl's bug party. I'll try to find it and post tomorrow.

Make a catipilliar (I KNOW that's spelled wrong! lol) cake out of cupcakes. I've seen one in a magazine before and they're adorable! The lady bug would be neat, too. :)

Great ideas everyone! I just couldn't get out of the "creepy" side of bugs....esp as DD brought her plastic bugs out saying "wouldn't this be PERFECT for to decorate my cake?" And there were all very real looking bugs LOL.

OK I know this sounds funny but what about a worm cake.

I made one fo these for haloween a couple of years ago.

Make the cake normal cook it and then take it out of the oven. Only let it sit for maybe 5-10 minutes and then take a large straw like from a sports bottle and punch holes in your cake the straw will pull out pieces of the cake then take gummy worms and stick ends of the worms in the holes as the cake cools it will suck the worms into the cake so they will all be different lengths it was really neat the way it did this.

Good luck!!

Ok, I found my party book. It has a ladybug party and a butterfly party in it.

For the ladybug party there are directions for a ladybug cake, invitations you can make that look like ladybugs and their wings open to reveal the party info, decorating ideas (they even tell you how to make paperplates that look like ladybugs), how to make antennae for each child to wear, stick the spot on the ladybug game, dance the jitterbug, paint rocks to look like ladybugs, and treat bag ideas, and a couple of other game ideas.

For the butterfly party there are directions for making butterfly wings for the children to wear (kids can actually make these themselves), butterfly decorations, butterfly grilled cheese sandwiches, treat bag ideas, jello butterflies, hunt for nectar game, cocoon wrap game, and a butterfly relay game.

There is also directions for making furry spiders from buttons and pipecleaners that look easy and spider pretzels with Ritz crackers, peanutbutter and stick pretzels.

If you want specific directions on any of these, let me know and I'll post them, but there are too many for me to type them all in right now.:)

What about those "Dirt" cakes where there are the gummy worms inside and all that funky stuff? Did anyone suggest that? Sorry, didn't read everything. LOL! That looks fun! Then you could just top it off with some fake plastic bugs. Or attach them to plastic sticks, so it looks like they are flying around.

I like Tonya's idea! Cute!

I just love all these ideas! I keep a surprise from DD. I had no idea a bug party could be fun!

THANKS SO MUCH!

What a wonderful party...can I attend?? I surely think that a child that wants a "bug" birthday party is definately a well rounded child and able to "take on" anything, she must have a good example at home eh!!!!!! Let us know how it turns out.

Perhaps for the loot bag ( if you do that sort of thing), you could give out a butterfly kit, the kind where they can watch the caterpillar metamorphisize (sp?), I think that would be wonderful to see it grow and change and then to release it....also on the "food" end you could find a cookie cutter and cut the sandwhiches cheese etc. into cool bug shapes...I really like the dragonfly aspect...very cool and I just watched the movie Dragonfly with Kevin Costner...it was pretty good...HAVE FUN

(p.s. do you have a conservatory or a bug display at a local zoo/park...that could be you're outing

Dana, do you want to hear something funny? This will probably creep you out, since you hate bugs so much.
When DH and I got engaged, I wanted to get married on Halloween and have a Halloween theme. LOL Yes, it's true, I always thought that would have been fun, and we both LOVE Halloween. But - Halloween is THE big season/money maker for his company so there was no question about him taking time off then. Also thought it would have been fun to go to Key West at that time.
I know all of you think I am totally weird now, huh?

By Dana on Thursday, February 6, 2003 - 12:46 pm:

Actually, I like bugs. Just couldn't picture bugs as a girls theme LOL. Halloween is fun, but I don't think I would have ever given it a second thought as a wedding theme :)

Marymary, yes, she is well rounded. Loves to be mommy to her baby doll and pets and loves being a scientist the rest of the time! She used to pick up dead bugs, but won't any more because, off all the bugs, I HATE roaches. I jumped 10ft and screamed bloody murder ONCE in front of her when a roach approached me. Now she won't touch real bugs unless I do it first.

EEWwwwwwwwww, YUCK! THAT IS EXACTLY what DD has been describing for her cake!!!! ROFLOL.

That is the party I had in my mind when I posted my question. Eating a cake like that is so gross! DD will LOVE it!!

By Dana on Thursday, February 6, 2003 - 05:00 pm:

oops didn't see the ladybug link. I think *I* prefer the lady bug :) Much more "lady"-like.

Thanks for the links. I've bookmarked them. Can't believe it is time for me to already start working on this stuff.

By Renee on Thursday, February 6, 2003 - 06:38 pm:

Glad to help Dana. Can you believe our lil ones are gonna be 5???? I sure can't!!
