Understanding height/weight chart

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Understanding height/weight chart
By Cybermommyx4 on Friday, June 8, 2007 - 06:58 pm:

My 11.5 year old son is 58" tall and weighs 124 pounds. He is a little bit on the heavy side, but he wants to know what he "should" weigh. I looked at the chart for boys ages 2-20, and it looks like he is around the 50th percentile....but I don't think that's right. He is a little bit pudgy but not "fat", but I would guess he's higher than the 50th percentile? Can someone explain, please? He wants to lose a little bit of weight so he doesn't feel embarassed to take off his shirt while swimming and show his belly :( It is heartbreaking as a mom to know this is stressing him out. If I had to guess, I'd say he could lose about 10 pounds and be about average, but that's just a guess. TIA for any help with this topic. :)

Without doing much research I can tell you that my same age son is 61 inches tall and weighs 120 and we were recently told he was about 7 pounds overweight.

I found this ideal weight calculator and thought you might find it helpful. There is also a BMI calculator on that site that I've used to check out my dks. I'd keep in mind that he is at an age where he may be bulking up in preparation for a growth spurt. HTH:)

Hello, I plotted your son's measurements on the BMI index and it also offers an ideal weight index and this is what it said:

There are a lot of different ways to think about a person's ideal body weight. Some people would consider it to be the weight that was directly proportional to a person's height, so that you wouldn't have people who are short and fat or tall and thin...

A 'better' way to think about a person's ideal body weight is as what is a 'healthy' weight for their age and height using their body mass index.

Please keep in mind that many factors go into determining if someone is 'healthy' and that this is just one tool. Talk to your Pediatrician if you have concerns about your child's weight.

A 11 year and 5 months old (male) child who is 124 pounds and is 4 feet and 10 inches tall has a body mass index of 26.0, which is over the 95th percentile, and would indicate that your child is overweight.

Your child's ideal body weight would be at a BMI at the 85th percentile or below, and so would be about 98 pounds.

That doesn't necessarily mean that your child has to lose 26 pounds. As he gets older and taller, he may thin out some and therefore just need to stop gaining weight, gain weight more slowly or lose some of that weight. Talk to your Pediatrician for more help interpreting these results.

See our guide to Overweight Kids for help getting your child to a healthy bmi, and the Top Books to Help Overweight Kids.

See the notes on BMI below if you have any questions...

To interpret your child's BMI, you can also check the Boys BMI Growth Charts to see if your child has a healthy bmi. Just plot your childs age and BMI and see what the percentile is. (See our guide to Understanding Growth Charts if you are not sure what to do.)

Remember, a child is considered to be:

* overweight if they have a BMI over the 95th percentile for their age
* at risk of becoming overweight if they have a BMI between the 85th and 95th percentile for their age
* underweight if they have a BMI under the 5th percentile for their age

And a child has a healthy BMI if it is between the 5th and 85th percentile.

Kate again. I would talk to his doctor about some safe ways he could lose or grow into the weight. Good luck!

My daughter was 12 in March, she's 5'4" and weighs 98lbs. She's tall and thin, and that link says she's perfect - 24th percentile.

Another daughter will be 11 in July, is 5'3" and 109lbs. She's in the 74th, again listed as perfect. She's also tall, but not quite as thin as her sister.
