Seems my son...

...has a broken finger! Well, the tip of it anyway. He fell while sparring at karate, get this, about THREE months ago!!! From the last nuckle up swelled up a bit, but wasn't really sore or anything and he could move it okay so we didn't get concerned. About 6 weeks ago Robin came to me and said it was still swollen and looked funny. Sure enough, it looked exactly like it had after he did it. I had no clue it was still swollen! So I talked to a friend who knows about such things and we moved it around--still no pain and full range of motion. So last week Robin comes to me again and says it's STILL swollen. I look, sure enough, looks the same and now the nail is starting to die right by the cuticle. So I made an appointment for yesterday, we saw the ped, he sent us for an x-ray and I had a message from him on my cell (he called the house first and actually talked to Robin--I was a couple streets down at a friend's house) that it looks like Robin has an avulsion fracture of the last knuckle and he'd like to see him again next week and he put in a consult for ortho. It's been literally months since he did this! I'm afraid they're going to want to rebreak it to fix it. I asked yesterday what they'd do if it were broken and the doctor said splint it. This should be interesting. We go to Vegas for our karate seminar in about 5 weeks. If it's not one thing, it's another...
Things are never calm around your house, are they, Cat??? Good luck with the consult. I'll be hoping that a splint will fix it without rebreaking.
Rebreaking??? Ouch! Hope things go well.
crazy crazy cat...keep us posted!
From what I remember an avulsion fracture means that the tendon or ligament pulled off/'fractured' a peace of bone. I don't think they have re-break it for that; the ligament or tendon will need to have time to grow back to the bone. It's been a while since I studied this stuff, but that is what I remeber. You could probably look up avulsion fraction to find out more.
