Gardening question...has anyone ever?

put pumpkins in a container? We are getting ready to do a major landscaping job - taking all the grass in the immediate back out and having beds put in. I also usually do a veg. garden, but instead of rototilling it this year, I am moving it to a new spot and having the landscaper guy till the soil for me. Anyways, dd, 6, planted 2 pumpkin plants in a cup at school and they are HUGE - starting to flower - I am afraid I am going to lose them if I move them now and I am afraid I wont be able to transplant them into the garden because it's taking forever to get this project moving. I have a pot that's deep enough and wide enough...or I could put them in a 1/2 whiskey barrel. So have you ever put pumpkins in a container and if so did they actually produce pumpkins?

We've never done it before, but this year I'm buying two 1/2 whiskey barrels for the boys to plant things in. They're both doing pumpkins, maybe cantelope (they haven't decided), onions, carrots and lettuce. It will probably be a few more weeks before we start, though. We got about 1-2 inches of snow last night and they're calling for more today and tonight. Nothing like April in Colorado! lol Sorry, no experience, but I'd go for it. You know they'll die if you don't, so you really have nothing to lose. :)

I just did a google search and found out that yes, you can, so I'm going to transplant them tomorrow. Good luck with your container gardens.

I've done a lot of container gardening, as well as "plot' gardening and (at least in my experience)unlike tomatoes, squashes of all kinds (including pumpkins) generally like plenty of room for their roots. A whiskey barrel may be fine, but in my case it stunted the plant's growth (compared to those plants put out in the in the garden) and reduced the size and number of pumpkins.

Best of Luck....Doug

Can you just dig up a little area, throw a pile of soil (a large mound) and plant in that one spot for this year?

I wish I could keep plants alive. All I have managed to keep alive are orchids and thats only because they are hard to kill!

Kudos to all of you with that spcial 'green thumb'!

Yes, when I was a little girl growing up in Brooklyn, my father grew pumpkins and zucchini in containers on the side of our house along a fence. We didn't have the space in the garden to grow them.

They were really plastic barrels with holes drilled in the bottom for drainage.

We never let them get to the fruit bearing stage (the pumpkins). We used to fry the flowers. They were so good.
Good luck.

Thanks, I found a spot to put them!
