I thought I would finally have an answer about my son but I just feel more confused!!!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: I thought I would finally have an answer about my son but I just feel more confused!!!

I have posted on here a few times about my ds. I had decided at the beginning of this year to have him tested outside. By a neuro psych hoping that this would finally be the answer. Just a little background. He had water on his brain at 6 months. It was not a birth defect. Took meds and it went away. But caused motor and speech delays. He has had speech therapy since he was 15 months old. Physical therapy from 15 months to 6. Very sweet, shy, and quiet kid at school. Seems to be lost a lot of the time but always "gets by". We had a early start to kindergarten due to the therapy he was getting, so he repeated 1st and is back on track age was and is keeping up for now. The school always says the same thing. Chase is just a mystery. This year same thing. Always done last with everything. But he is keeping up with what he should know. The teacher said that she has to direct him though to the right page, keep him going ect... But when he is done, he does well. W also found out he has a hearing loss in the right ear at high decibles so a hearing aid won't help. Could have little to no impact. Displays some sensory issues such as stemming and hand flapping. But is not on the autistic realm. The neuro psych felt it was just sensory issues with the water on his brain. He also has some auditory processing issues going on possibly due to the hearing loss but the muscles in his ears are also weak. So just a big jumble mess of things that leads to nothing. Not that I want my child to be diagnosed but its almost more frustrating not knowing if this is all just normal, or he needs help. His verbal scores were like below average and his performance scores were borderline high. They said only .7% of the population have that kind of a descrepancy. The pscyh doctor said he could equal out as he get older. I guess he did give somewhat of a diagnosis. He said Learning disorder, not otherwise specialized, and ADHD combined type. But when speaking with him I felt he was kind of not commital on the ADHD. Because of the hearing loss ect... So bascially he was non commital on meds. He said it was up to the parents at this point since bascially he is getting by. So I am at a loss as to what to do. This was why I went this route so someone else would tell me what I should do. My dh could care less he thinks I make way to big of a deal about it and he was the same way and he is fine now. I am going to really talk to my ds and see how he feels. I don't know if he can really tell me though but that may be my deciding factor. Any advice. Sorry so long but I just needed to get this out.

Beth, how frustrating! I guess where I'm confused is that the psych is saying there's a LD, but then following that with NOS. HOW can you address and accommodate a LD if it's not specified??? Ugh. I wish I had some answers for you. Hugs

I really wish I could tell you about the rest of it but when Alexis was diagnosed with ADHD the Dr. gave me the same speech about meds were something that were totally up to me. Well I decided to try and see what happened. Well she made a huge turn around from barely getting by to making straight A's.

As I stated before I have no experience with the other problems so this may not help, but I am so glad another mother told me to try the meds and if they didn't work I could always discontinue them.

Good Luck with everything ((((HUGS))))

I would call a PPT and take the results to the school. Hold off on meds until you are sure that you and your family can't live without them. That's when you'll know it's time for meds.

All the sensory stuff makes sense to me. My son has sensory issues and they sound very similar to what you are describing. Have they given him OT to address sensory integration, which is very different from PT? I found a word of difference when my son was recieving OT. It really helped him with motor planning and staying on task.
I hope you and the professionals working with you can come up with a plan.
Ame
