Learning problems, learning rx?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: Learning problems, learning rx?
By 2ofeach on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 - 10:22 pm:

I am new to momsview. I have 4 children, 2 with learning problems. I am having my oldest tested at learning rx. Does anyone have any experience with this program? My son has problems with language, comprehension, reading, and has been diagnosed "border-line or mild add/adhd". I am trying to find a program that will help him filter and file better so he will be able to read and function at grade level ( he is currently 1 grade behind). He is brite and very creative, he has managed to find ways to fake his way through but that trick is failing him now that he is in the 4th grade. Please help with any insite or suggestions. His impulsiveness and thought lessness make it stressful both for him and the family. He means well but doesn't process any thoughts before acting. He forgets what he is talking about before he gets through a thought, like he loses his place while talking. I know this must be extremely frustrating for him as is it is for anyone who trys to listen to him.
I've gone on and on here but i'm just at my wits end... thanks for your help

Good luck. Have you had him tested for Sensory Integration Disorder? This sounds an awful lot like my son's issues - which are all sensory.
Hope all goes well - and welcome.

Ame, I've read a little about it but haven't had him tested, where do I go for that kind of testing and what programs are available to help with that disorder?
Thanks for posting!

I had my son tested through the school district. He qualified for OT for just a few months though, and then placed out.
Ask you son's teacher to request a special education evaluation. They should do a Sensory Profile as part of the testing.

If he does have sensory issues that are interfering with his ability to learn, then he should qualify for some kind of OT through the school system - at least that's the way its supposed to work.

Good luck.

Ame, thank you so much for your help. I will get him tested. He is currently on an IEP but I don't think it includes OT. I need all the help we can get!
thanks!!
