Tri-annual IEP meeting
Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: Tri-annual IEP meeting
I had Randy's tri-annual IEP meeting yesterday. He's had an IEP for a slight speech problem and been getting 30 minutes a week of speech therapy since the end of 2nd grade (he's in 5th now). He's been telling me for the last week they've been pulling him out of class to do a bunch of tests and that he may "graduate" from speech. I asked him if he wanted to do that and he said maybe, maybe not. He kind of likes going to speech class. While he has made improvements, there is still a noticable problem there. Dh and I are used to it, but I work with enough kids to still notice it. So I was a bit worried that he'd have met all his goals and they would discontinue services. They said he did very well on all the tests and even scored above average in math (knew that) and exceptional in short term memory and sequencing. They all love him. Then the speech teacher said he's still having troubles with /s/ and /r/ blends and she'd like to increase his time each week to two 30 minutes sessions instead of one because she'd like to resolve these problems before he gets to middle school next year. WOW! I was impressed to say the least. So the meeting went well, even with three little munchkins being very distracting. I don't have copies of everything yet because they were having problems with their computer. They'll send them home with Randy today or tomorrow. I have to say, after dealing with Robin's IEP meetings and the stress involved in those, it's so nice to have calm, peaceful meetings with Randy's team. I wish Robin's could have been that way.
I love those easy IEPs! How nice to have services bumped UP, rather than bumped altogether. Seth also has trouble with his /s/ and /r/ blends. His speech pathologist told me that those (along with the /l/ sound) are some of the last to develop. ^5 to Randy for doing so well with his testing!
Double post
Speech only issues are so much easier than what you deal with with Robin! It makes you appreciate it more though, right?!
