DS scored high average on speech test.

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: DS scored high average on speech test.

As many of you know ds has a speech delay. Very bad one too. He didn't talk at all at two years old.

So the speech therapist tested him at five years and one month old.

If 50% is dead on average - he tested 68 percent. Which is still average but high average. His articulation was also very good.

They had to pull out a special social language test (that they hardly ever use) to continue to get him more speech therapy. The test was very hard and I am sure no five year old would pass it but ds clearly still need speech therapy if you listen to him talk.

Example of the test was You see a puddle and you want to warn your friend Lisa.

What is the answer?

The only correct answer is

Lisa, Stop. Don't step in the puddle or you will get wet.

Ds answered. Stop. (stort answers for the whole test)

They did say ds was rated at 3.5 year is social skills overall. So we are still working on everything....

But he is doing good.

He's really come a long way! That's great. The social language is soo much tougher to teach. It still sounds like he did a good job.

This is good news, Feona. He really has made a lot of progress.

By Feona on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 - 07:32 am:

We are drawing pictures to help teach the social language. Ds loves to draw since he is very visual.

So he draws 2 boys playing basketball and himself or another kids asking, "Can I play too?"

Or he draws kids acting bad and getting hurt (like pushing or poking) there is always an adult saying "stop don't do that else you might get hurt.

He also drew pictures of space for circle time and lines.. personal space.

Seems to be very helpful. Hope it helps him remember.

That's terrific, Feona. Boy, special ed has come a long, long way since my oldest was in special ed. Thank goodness.

We just seem to be finding things to help him now.

He said during circle time yesterday, "I need my personal space." He is is funny...
