Changing Dr. with ADHD

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: Changing Dr. with ADHD
By Tarable on Monday, February 11, 2008 - 02:39 pm:

Okay my dds are both on ADHD meds and the scripts are written by their peditrician. I have been thinking about changing them to a regular family practice (the one I go to) and was wondering if any of you have been through this and know if it will be a hard thing to get a different dr to write the scripts. I love their dr but I can't stand the office hours. I have to physically go in and pick the script up every month but the office doesn't open until 9 and they close at 4:30 and my dr requires that if she writes a script that it is picked up that day so since she doesn't work on saturdays (the office is open from 9 to 1 on sat.)I just really have a hard time without taking time off to go pick up the scripts once a month. Espeically since they are closed during my lunch hour.

So all of you with ADHD kids on meds what kind of dr do your dks go to for the meds? Also is it a requirement by law or something that I have to get a new script every month and couldn't they just call it in?

I hope this all made sense...

Almost all of the ADHD meds are controlled substances so yes, they have to write a new rx every month and they can't fax or call it in. It's a pain, I know. I don't think it'd be a problem at all changing docs. I think you'd just have to make your girls appointments with the new doc and go over their history (if you can get copies of the medical records, great, but that could be a pain, too and they may try to make you pay for them). I've changed docs for Robin several times (for different reasons) and we never had a problem. Good luck.

My dd is also on ADHD meds. I had to keep going to the ped dr. for the rx monthly. I did finally find another option. I found a pediatric Psyciatrist. We doesn't cost me any more than the ped dr. He was better hours. It give my daughter a say in her meds. (at least he asks her how she feels and explains the med on her. He also will write me three months at a time.

It is a pain to get the rx. I thought it was bad before to have to go pick up the prescription but now the dr has to wait until I get there to sing it. If he's with a patient then that can be quite a wait. It is the law, at least here. I also can't use a drive thru pharmacy for the same reason.
