DS tested in the normal range for speech!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: DS tested in the normal range for speech!
By Feona on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 - 07:13 am:

(yes it was low normal, but he still tested in the normal range in understanding and speaking.) This is the first time I heard my sons speech was in the normal range! They said his articulation was pretty good too.

Even with that they gave him 3 times 45 minutes of speech for the fall. They are going to work more on social speech. How to have a conversation. Social conversation like greetings.

He has some autistic like qualities even though he doesn't test autism or ppd.

The supervisor said he thought ds was going to do really well in school and was very brite and very sweet and loving. Ds is like a love sponge.

We "main lined" him this past year against the advice of many of the experts, putting him in a regular preschool program with mostly 3 year olds. He really seems to have risen to the (speech) level of his peers. Only six months ago he would have great difficulty with the question:
"What did you do today?"
often describing things he didn't even do.

Development of his ability to talk about past experiences seems to have paralleled his ability to fantasy play (which has increased tremendously in the last 6 months).

He still has some difficulty with asking questions involving "Who, What, Where, etc."
and He, She, Mommy, Daddy, etc.

He will sometimes ask me:
"Where are they doing?" (instead of What)

Or
"What's his name?" (talking about a girl)

Overall, I think he's made over a year of progress in the last six months and appears to be accelerating in his progress.
BTW, our little guy turned 4 in February.

Yeah! Glad to hear of your son's progress!

That is so wonderful. It sounds like he was able to learn alot from the kids at preschool. Imitation of peers is a great learning tool! Pronouns are so difficult because so much reasoning has to go into using them. The faster he learns the more that gap is where he is and where his peers are will close and that's what we want to happen. Sounds like you make the right choice but it is nice to see your decision proved right.
