Milestones for babies with Down Syndrome

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: Milestones for babies with Down Syndrome
By Amyk on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - 04:42 pm:

Hi there -

My 14mo nephew has Down Syndrome and my sister is concerned about his progress (or lack thereof) with his motor skills. He has a therapist that visits weekly and has expressed her concern that he is not crawling yet. He can sit up and has one tooth. :0)... Can any moms of children with DS share when they hit their baby milestones?? The therapist also noted that the motor and cognotive development are closely tied and now my sister is worried about how her son will do in that department. He is a happy baby and loves people - I just thought I could gather some encouraging words for her.

Thanks in advance.

My friend child had cerebal palsy and they found a free special school to put her in during the day to help her. So she could get more therapy. Is there something like that available?

I imagine the baby should be getting pt three times a week if he isn't sitting up.

Down syndrome babies need alot of therapy. Speech, ot, physical therapy. Feeding sometimes...

Hi Amy,
I have two down syndrome babies that are almost two. As with all babies all learn at there own pace. Does the baby have any other health issues. My daughter had lower tone than my son. So he learned everything a little more faster than she did. Isaac is just starting to walk, and Savannah is just starting on taking steps.
SOme children though just skip crawling, two of my other children with no special needs never did. He is rolling over or doing like a combat crawl? And when on his stomach can he hold his weight up with is arms good, keeping his chest of the floor? Does the therapist use a large ball with the baby, that helps alot to build up muscle, and there is a great therapy book that gives lots of tips on what to do ourselves as parents to help with the therapy process, it is called
Gross Motor Skills with Downs Syndrome, (A guide for parents and professionals) by Patrica C. Winders P.T.

And Fine Motor Skills with Downs Syndrome by Maryanne Bruni OT(C)

And maybe more than once a week with the PT would be good also, Savannah's comes 2x's a week, and Isaac's comes ones, Savannah;s is a more qualified PT that Isaac;s is . I will ask what the diffrences are in the two. And they both now recieve speech therapy, Savannah also gets help with eating, she doesn't seem to chew, just wants to swallow and get that next bite, and she leaks alot of her fluids because she doesn't put her tongue on her cup or bottle right.
Any way if I can be any help just email me :-)

I agree with Amy. Just as with any child, children with DS vary greatly in their development. I'm a speech therapist and I have wonderful little girl with DS on my caseload. She will be 2 in October and doesn't crawl yet. She was also very delayed in sitting up. It just varies tremendously. What kind of therapist comes to the house? I'm also concerned that she's not getting enough therapy. Most DS babies here get ST, OT, PT and a home-based teacher who all come to the home at least weekly and it is funded by the state.

Hey everyone -

Thanks for the feedback - I will share it with my sister and I'm sure she'll fight to get the most she can for her son. :0) He is truly a delight and a very happy baby.
