3rd grader with CAPD HELP!!!!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: 3rd grader with CAPD HELP!!!!
By Peggy on Thursday, March 18, 2004 - 04:17 pm:

Hi All,

I have a third grader that was diagnosed with CAPD in 1st grade. The school has put her in special education even though her IQ is very high. I would love to know what other parents who's children have this are doing to help them learn the skills they need.

Thanks for any help

Peggy

I just spoke to someone who had child had severe austic symptons. (no autism) She put her child in Catholic schools and she is doing fine.

She says the catholic schools are more quiet. Not so chaotic. You have to sit and work. Something to think about.

Have you taken her to an audiologist?

Be sure and checkout the website schwablearning.org where there are a lot of people who know about CAPD. Go to the Connecting Section to get to the message board.

I'm sure you are aware that a learning disability such as this has nothing to do with IQ. Many kids in special ed for LDs have high IQ's.

In my area the Catholic schools are no place for kids with LDs such as CAPD. I have heard of some folks in other states have good luck with Catholic schools, but here they don't accept the kids with learning differences.

My son, who is ADHD/dyslexic, dysgraphic among other things, was in the public school for 3 years. He is now in a private school for kids with learning disabilities. I did not find that the public school here could help kids with LD kids, including my son.

I think you will get some good ideas on that schwablearning website. It was started by Charles Schwab who has learning disbabilities.
