Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: Activities
Kind of going along with my post on the main board, what kind of activities do you have your special need child in? Robin's pdoc said both swimming and karate would be wonderful for him and that 3 days a week wouldn't be to much. Dh didn't ask about 4 days a week. I know Laura's son is in karate. What other activities have you all done? I know Robin's good at and enjoys gymnastics and that would be good for him (lots of activity), but we'd have to drive 20 minutes each way and it's expensive (like $100 for an 8 week session, plus registration fees). It's a great program, though. Maybe someday. Thoughts? Experience? Just curious. Maybe looking for ideas. TIA
My 5 y/o gs isn't in any special activities yet. Over the course of this year, we plan to get him involved in either a soccer or basketball program and perhaps both. We checked on these this past year, but he couldn't sign up until he was 6. Of course, we have some concerns about how he will get along with the other children. We'll just have to see though and go on from there.
The boys started karate last night and they enjoyed it. Robin slept very well last night, also. I'm hoping the karate had something to do with it. He's ended up on the couch in the living room probably 10 out of the last 14 nights, but last night stayed in his room all night! The kids rooms are in the basement along with the den/family room. Our room is on the main level along with the living room and guest/play room. We've told him if he wakes up and wants to come upstairs to go sleep in the guest room bed so I don't wake him up early in the morning (I get up around 5). We'll see how he does tonight. They have karate again tomorrow. If it does help him with his sleep problems maybe we will have to find something (swimming maybe) for the other nights of the week. Just thinking outloud (typing outloud!lol). Thanx for listening.
The assistant of special ed here says anything to burn off the extra energy seems to help. Makes sense.
Cat, my 5 y/o grandson ends up sleeping on the living room couch at least half the time. Even if he goes to sleep in his bedroom, he gets up during the night and goes to the couch. His parents usually know nothing about it until they get up the next morning. Why do you think your ds ends up on the couch? I have always wondered why my gs does this.
