My husband's cholesterol level is not good. Any help with meal planning and recipes would be appreciated.

By Bea on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 - 11:10 pm:

Exercise, exercise, exercise. It does 100% more than any diet changes.

By Nanie on Thursday, March 17, 2005 - 11:25 am:

Thanks. That was one of the recommendations from the doctor also.

In addition to the exercise...

What is not good about his cholesterol?

HDL low?
LDL high?

Increase his consumption of green vegetables (like brocolli and green leafy types).

Cut back on sugery baked goods like cakes, cookies, etc(especially the store bought kind made with trans fats)

My dh is the same way and he is only 31 (runs in the family). We went low cal and low fat all the way and his cholesterol dropped 35 points in 6mths. (We were semi-low cal/fat before that) He has always exercised 5 days a week so there was nothing to change there. He's in great shape so we just changed eating habits. It has made a huge difference in his cholesterol because we do not want him to go on cholesterol-lowering drugs at his age. We also did a major sugar cut-back...snacks and desserts are always sugar free or low sugar now. Hope this helps!

Switch to whole grains and good fats, lean meat, try to go vegetarian a couple of nights a week, don't buy anything with the words "partially hydrogenated" on its list of ingredients.

and ditto Bea, exercise, exercise, exercise
